John James Wertz, 55, Altoona, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday. He was born in Altoona, son of the late William B. Sr. and Judy Jean Wertz.
Surviving are a daughter, Amber “Nikki” Williams of Altoona; a son, Justin James Wertz, and wife, Hatty, of Altoona; grandchildren: Haley, Abby, Jarek, James, Savannah, Jaise, Reiley and Jack; and siblings: William B. Wertz Jr. (Brenda), Kevin Wertz Sr. (Carmen), Pamela Wertz (Kristin) and Shaun Wertz (Lisa).
He was preceded in death by an uncle, Robert “Spike” Nail.
John retired as a sergeant in 2015 from the State Correctional Institution in Chester.
He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, riding his motorcycle and playing bingo with his daughter. He was also an avid Steelers fan, but most importantly, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. They enjoyed playing games, going on adventures and playing Pokemon Go around town. One of his greatest joys was cooking meals for his family during the holidays.
John was a veteran of the U.S. Army, with extended time in Panama.
A Celebration of Life service will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, at Bellwood Fire Hall, 399 S. First St., Bellwood.
Arrangements are by Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s honor to a veteran’s charity of choice.
