John Stamos, best known for his iconic role in “Full House,” is making headlines for two significant revelations that he opens up about in his forthcoming memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me.”
The 60-year-old actor, who is set to release his book on October 24, is sharing deeply personal experiences that have shaped his life in profound ways.
Stamos: “I didn’t tell anyone”
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Stamos courageously discloses his experience as a survivor of sexual abuse during his childhood.
The alleged misconduct took place at the hands of his former babysitter.
He revealed, “It took me writing a book to realize her alleged actions were inappropriate.”
For years, these memories remained tucked away, as is often the case with traumatic experiences.
Stamos reflected on it while writing an acceptance speech for an award he received for advocating for abused children, and that’s when it resurfaced.
The actor reflects on why he didn’t speak up about it at the time, saying, “I didn’t tell anyone. It was like you’re playing dead so they’ll stop. But it wasn’t totally aggressive. I don’t know, it was not good.”
Ultimately, he decided not to make the moment about himself, emphasizing that the focus should be on the kids.
Stamos, who is now a father to five-year-old son Billy with his wife Caitlin McHugh Stamos, has a different perspective as a parent.
In the interview, he acknowledges that he would react differently if he ever found out someone had harmed his child, emphasizing the gravity of protecting one’s own.
Stamoscandidly recalls ex-wife Rebecca Romijn
In his memoir, Stamos also candidly addresses another challenging chapter in his life: his divorce from Rebecca Romijn in 2004.
He confessed, “I just hated her,” during the divorce and considered her “the devil.”
The separation weighed heavily on him for years, but he eventually recognized his part in it.
Stamos shared that he initially believed the breakup happened because his career was on a downward trajectory while Romijn’s was thriving. He acknowledged that he was not entirely blameless in the situation.
“You start thinking, it’s like, ‘Oh, she wasn’t the devil. Maybe I was as much to blame as her.’ It was very much the opinion that she dumped me because her career was going great and mine wasn’t. I don’t blame her for it. It was just the perception that people took.”
“Maybe they weren’t wrong,” he admitted. “She was doing great at that time and I wasn’t.”
The actor, now sober, has since moved on and found happiness with Caitlin McHugh, whom he married in 2018. They welcomed their son, Billy, two months later.
