Johnny Depp finally got the $1 million Amber Heard owed him after he won the shocking defamation case against her a year ago.
According to court papers filed by Heard’s lawyers and seen by Radar Online, the Aquaman star paid the $1 million settlement with the help of her insurance company.
Heard lost her libel case against the Pirates of the Caribbean actor when the jury found out that she had spread false information about the actor by saying he had abused her.
After a six-week trial, the actor from “The Rum Diary” was told to pay $15 million to Depp as a settlement. This was made up of $10 million in “compensatory damages” and $5 million in “punitive damages.”
But after the verdict was released, Heard and Depp came to a settlement. Heard agreed to pay Depp $1 million, but her insurance company wouldn’t pay the settlement fee for her.
New York Marine and General Insurance Co. said they won’t pay the fee because the star slandered her husband in a “willful” and “malicious” way.
In an interview with People Magazine, Camille Vasquez, who used to be Depp’s lawyer, also said that Heard has paid the settlement fee.
“Ms. Heard did pay Mr. Depp, not the other way around. I want to make that very, very clear,” Vasquez said. “The judgment still stands. It will always still stand for the remainder of time.”
She also said, “And Mr. Depp will be donating the money that Ms. Heard paid to settle the appeal to a number of charities. Case closed, and we couldn’t be happier about it for him in the best possible way.”
