The O.N. Jonas Foundation announces this year’s arts-in-education grant recipients.

The foundation oversees two major grant entities: the Seretean Foundation grants for elementary schools and the Lorberbaum Foundation grants for middle and high schools. Teachers in the Dalton, Murray County and Whitfield County schools may apply for grants to expand and enhance arts instruction in visual arts, music, theater or dance.

Students at Westwood, Northwest and Cedar Ridge elementary schools will benefit from this year’s Seretean grants. Under the direction of Tiffany Hunt, Westwood students will learn to play the ukulele. Northwest teacher Sloane Singleton will use puppets to teach reading skills and reenforce social/emotional learning concepts. Cedar Ridge students will learn art concepts from their principal, Carla Maret.

The Seretean grants began in 2011. Due to their success in enhancing arts learning in area elementary schools, in 2021 the Lorberbaum Foundation established grants for middle and high school arts.

Mathew Sane’s students at Dalton High will plan and execute a district-wide art show. North Murray High students under the supervision of Kristy Sitton will use Photoshop and Wacom Drawing Boards Integration to enhance the Georgia High School Art Curriculum. Instrument-specific professionals will give small-group lessons to Ashley Hooker’s band students at Southeast High. The students will also attend an Atlanta Symphony Orchestra live concert event.
