
Many tournaments await local high school basketball teams this week as they spread out the northern part of the state while schools look for some early-season momentum out of the gates.
Starting with the girls in the Little 4, after a couple of close losses to start the season, the Hoopa Valley Warriors will try to get their first win of the season against the McKinleyville Panthers, with that game getting started Thursday night at 6 p.m. The Warriors will then play Arcata and Willits on Friday and Saturday to close out their week.
The St. Bernard’s girls’ team will open their season on the road Thursday, facing Aspire Langston Hughes Academy at 8 p.m. with games the following two days with their opponents to be decided by the tournament games outcome.
Ferndale’s first game of the season is Thursday when the Wildcats head to Cloverdale for a tournament, they’ll open up against Upper Lake with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m.
The South Fork Cubs opened their season with a resounding 54-14 loss to Fort Bragg last week but they’ll get a chance to right the ship Tuesday when they head to Hayfork before heading to Willits to play the Wolverines on Dec. 8.
As for the boys, South Fork’s team was able to beat Fort Bragg 56-43 and they’ll also get a crack at Willits on Wednesday night as they try to get to 2-0.
Hoopa’s boys’ team is 0-2, after losing to Eureka before suffering a one-point defeat against Del Norte at home on Friday. Now the Warriors face a 3-0 Cosumnes Oaks team to open a weekend tournament in McKinleyville where Hoopa looks to make their way into the win column. It’s the first of three straight weekends with tournaments for the Warriors.
The Ferndale boys’ basketball season will start Friday with their opening matchup in the Jolly Roger Tournament in Point Arena against Technology High, the game is set for 5 p.m. with their CIF Bowl playoff football game also that night, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats basketball team will be missing three players who are still competing on the gridiron.
St. Bernard’s heads to Upper Lake for a tournament starting Thursday, with their first game against Maxwell High at 5:30 p.m. and games against Round Valley and Upper Lake to round out their weekend.
The boys’ Big 5 teams are off and running, the McKinleyville Panthers are 3-1 after picking up a 57-50 over Shasta at home on Tuesday. Next for the Panthers is their home tournament with games set for Thursday through Saturday.
Also in action in the McKinleyville tournament are the Arcata Tigers. The Tigers are 1-0 after beating Healdsburg 72-34 on Saturday. Arcata opens up the tournament against San Lorenzo on Thursday with that set to get underway at 4 p.m.
Del Norte is 1-0 after their 52-51 win over Hoopa on the road, now the Warriors will compete in the Yreka Tournament, opening it up against the host team, Yreka High, before taking on Crater and Henley high schools in the tournament.
The Eureka Loggers are 2-0 after their wins versus Hoopa and Shasta. The Loggers will look to make it 3-0 on Thursday when they travel to play Petaluma at 7 p.m.
After beating Cloverdale last week in a foundation game, the Fortuna Huskies opened their season last Saturday with a 52-49 loss to Ukiah, as Fortuna had the ball at the end of regulation down three but was unable to get a shot off. Senior Alfonso Medina led the way scoring with 22 but couldn’t overcome 19 Husky turnovers. Now Fortuna will compete in the Harlan Center Tournament in Redding starting on Thursday at 5:30 against Foothill.
The Fortuna girls’ team is eyeing a 3-0 start to the season, after beating Fort Bragg and Ukiah, will now face Woodland Christian High School. 3-0 won’t come easy against a talented Woodland Christian team that finished last year 22-8.
The girl’s Del Norte Warrior team is 1-0 after narrowly beating Hoopa Valley 55-53 and will now take on Orland High to start off their weekend tournament. Eureka is now 2-1 after getting a 81-28 beat down at the hands of Acalanes but they’ll have a chance to put that behind them in the Gridley Tournament Thursday against Woodland.
The Arcata Tigers’ open their season at home with the Women’s Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament with a game Thursday against Willits at 7:30 before playing Hoopa and McKinleyville Friday and Saturday.
McKinleyville is in the same boat as they also start their year with the WAIBT on Thursday against Hoopa before getting their crack at Willits and Arcata as well.
