TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A federal judge has denied JT Burnette’s request to travel overseas this fall to attend a Taylor Swift concert.
Burnette petitioned the court in January for permission to travel internationally “for work and vacation with my family.”
A letter sent by Burnette to U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle indicated he was working on projects with “international partners in Europe and China.” It also said his family has “tentative plans to attend a Taylor Swift concert abroad in the fall.”
The judge denied Burnette’s request in a two-page order dated January 25th, saying “Offenders on supervised release ordinarily are not allowed to travel internationally except briefly in exceptional circumstances. Mr. Burnette has not presented exceptional circumstances.”
Burnette has been released from federal prison but is still in the midst of serving a year on supervised release.
Burnette was one of three people convicted and sent to prison in a Tallahassee corruption scandal. He was sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of extortion and bribery in November 2021. Bureau of Prisons records show Burnette was released from BOP custody on October 27, 2023, but is still in the midst of serving one year on supervised release.
BOP records indicate both of his co-defendants, former Tallahassee City Commissioner Scott Maddox and longtime associate Paige Carter-Smith have been released. Carter-Smith in January 2023 and Maddox just last week on February 16th.
