Why did Netflix cancel Julie and the Phantoms Season 2?

Season 1 premiered on September 10, 2020, with a total of nine episodes. Fans were hooked to the engaging storytelling revolving around a teen girl’s friendship with ghosts, with a backdrop of music. As such, many were expecting the story to be explored further in a new season. However, the streaming platform did not announce the musical drama’s renewal for another chapter for a long time.

Further, in December 2021, the loyal viewers of Julie and the Phantoms were met with a piece of shocking news. The series’ executive producer, Kenny Ortega, announced on his Instagram that Julie and the Phantoms is canceled and won’t return for Season 2. He wrote, “We learned this week that Netflix will not be picking us up for another season.” Ortega further added, “Although our hearts are saddened, we move on with such pride for what we accomplished as a team and the family we built while creating Julie.”

However, the reason behind the decision wasn’t revealed by either the makers or the streaming platform. The show had a positive reception with an 8.4/10 rating on IMDb and 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is possible the streaming platform reportedly wasn’t satisfied with the demographic the show worked with and didn’t deem it fit to be renewed for more seasons. Nevertheless, the real reason continues to remain a mystery to date.

Meanwhile, fans can revisit Julie and the Phantoms Season 1 on Netflix.
