Kansas police officers participate in mental health training

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – More than 40 law enforcement officers from across Kansas participated in mental health training on Thursday.

The officers, from six different jurisdictions, are undergoing advanced mental health training to become members of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) to better serve their community.

The training event is hosted by the Independent Living Resource Center and offers scenarios to simulate real-life situations. Using communication training, officers learn how to assist individuals and their families.

The CIT program is a community partnership of law enforcement, mental health and addiction professionals, individuals who live with the conditions, their families and other advocates. The CIT’s mission is to combat the rising amount of mental health calls.
