Kansas woman dies after car catches fire following weekend collision

PITTSBURG, Kan. (KCTV) – A Kansas woman is dead after the vehicle she was driving veered off the road, flipped and caught fire over the weekend.

The Kansas Highway Patrol Crash Log indicates that around 3:05 a.m. on Sunday, March 3, emergency crews were called to the area of mile marker 17.4 on westbound K-126 – 4 miles west of Pittsburg – with reports of a single-vehicle collision.

When first responders arrived, they said they found a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Ashley M. Rendon, 26, of Parsons, had been headed west on the highway. For an unknown reason, however, the vehicle veered off the road and into the south ditch where it struck a culvert.

KHP Troopers noted that the impact of the collision caused the vehicle to flip onto its top before it caught fire.

First responders indicated that Rendon was pronounced deceased at the scene. It is unknown if she was wearing a seatbelt at the time or not.
