The title of the Met Gala 2023, “In Honor of Karl,” is a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, who was a fashion icon who had a lasting effect on the industry. Attendees of the annual Costume Institute Benefit held on the first Monday of May at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art are expected to dress to the nines.
The dress code will match Lagerfeld’s complicated history, and guests can’t wait to see how people interpret the theme.
“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” the spring show at the Costume Institute, will also look at Lagerfeld’s long career. It will open to the public the next day.
Lagerfeld has done a lot for the fashion industry. He has been the creative head of high-end brands like Chanel and Fendi and worked with fashion houses like Chloé, Patou, and Balmain.
The themes of the Met Gala are generally based on the latest shows at the Costume Institute. Themes from the past have been ideas or places, but particular designers have also been honored, like Rei Kawakubo in 2017 and Alexander McQueen a year after his death in 2011.
“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” is the spring show at the Costume Institute this year. It comes more than 20 years after a controversial project between Lagerfeld and the museum fell through. The show will be up until the middle of July.
