Kent Circle Christmas tree raised as parade planned

After Ringo Tarr of Gloucester and a crew arrived from the town of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada, towing a trailer with a roughly 35-foot fir tree donated by the Butler family of Shelburne last Tuesday, Tarr and a volunteer crew set about to raise it on Kent Circle with daylight waning at dusk on Friday.

Meanwhile, planning for Gloucester’s Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony is underway, according to Joe Ciolino of the Downtown Merchants Association.

The donation of the Kent Circle tree by Shelburne goes back more than 25 years. Tarr was helped in erecting the tree by a cousin, Ken Taliadoros at Great Eastern Marine, who provided the crane, said Tarr’s brother, state Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr of Gloucester, in a text message.

Both Ringo Tarr and his son, Jonathan, used a chain saw to shape the base of the tree to fit the hole in Kent Circle where the tree will stand for the holiday season.

The parade will take place on Sunday, Nov. 26, leaving from the Jodrey State Fish Pier at 3 p.m. The parade route travels down Parker Street to Main Street, and then down Western Avenue to the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Kent Circle. The tree lighting will take place at dusk. Ciolino said following that, Santa will be available in his sleigh for pictures.

Parade organizers are looking for floats, groups of enthusiastic marchers, school groups and musical entertainment. The only requirement is that the entry have a holiday theme. All entrants will be eligible to win a first-, second- or third-place trophy. Mayor Greg Verga will lead the judge’s float this year.

This year’s grand marshals are going to be Ruth Pino, Bob Gillis and Bruce Tobey, the tri-chairs for the Gloucester 400th Anniversary Committee.

Those wishing to enter a float or group of marchers in parade are asked to contact Ciolino at The Weathervane at [email protected] or call 978-281-1227 to register. The parade will line up at 2 p.m. at the Jodrey State Fish Pier for the 3 kickoff at 3 p.m. Rain date is Dec. 3.
