The Kimball Area High School art students had what art instructor Jesse Lesnau referred to as a “very strong showing” at the Minnesota State High School League’s Region 5A Visual Arts Contest, held this year at Kimball Area High School on April 30.
This festival gave students the chance to display their artwork and receive professional feedback from judges, who selected pieces for top honors in each category. As a group, the Kimball students earned 16 Superior ratings, five Perfect scores, and two “Best of Show” honors.
Kimball’s “Best of Show” students – Zach Kourima and Frank Schiefelbein – had their work showcased at the MSHSL State Art Exhibition on May 7 at the Perpich Center for the Arts in Golden Valley. Kourima’s artwork was titled “Patience,” and Schiefelbein’s was “Small Town Urban Legend.”
Students also had the chance to tour local artist studios in the Kimball area. Several highlights included a live pottery demonstration at Maine Prairie Studio; a look into professional branding, apparel design, and visual communication at AK Graphics; and a behind-the-scenes tour of Brodin Studios, specializing in bronze sculpture casting.
