Korea’s Daewoo makes a comeback to India with automotive batteries

Daewoo, a Korean brand that should be familiar to car affcianados in the country, is set to make a return to the Indian automotive market, specifically in the automotive battery market.

In the late 1990s, Daewoo Motors India was among the first foreign car manufacturers to set up production in India, introducing popular models like the Matiz and Cielo. However, the company’s presence in India was short-lived due to financial troubles at its parent company in South Korea. Daewoo Motors India ceased operations in 2001, marking the end of its brief but impactful stint in the Indian automotive sector.

Now, after more than two decades, the brand is making a comeback, albeit in a different segment of the automotive industry. The company is launching a range of advanced four-wheeler batteries for cars, trucks, tractors, and buses, designed specifically to meet the challenges of Indian roads and climate conditions.

Mr. H. S. Bhatia, Managing Director of DAEWOO India, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s return: “We are excited to reintroduce DAEWOO’s automotive batteries to India, combining our global expertise with products tailored specifically for the Indian market.”

The new batteries boast several features, including strong construction for durability, advanced vibration resistance, and a maintenance-free design. They also offer rapid recharge capability and reliable performance in extreme temperatures, addressing key concerns of Indian vehicle owners.

Daewoo’s re-entry into the Indian market with these high-tech batteries signifies a shift in strategy from its previous venture as a car manufacturer. By focusing on a crucial component of automotive technology, the company aims to establish a strong presence in India’s growing automotive aftermarket.

The launch of these batteries marks a new chapter in DAEWOO’s relationship with the Indian market, as the company seeks to leverage its global experience and technological prowess to meet the evolving needs of Indian consumers. As the automotive industry in India continues to grow and evolve, DAEWOO’s return could potentially pave the way for further innovations and investments in the sector.
