La Porte High School showcases musical brilliance at annual Spring Variety Show

Students at La Porte High School got to showcase their musical talents at the school’s Spring Variety Show on Friday, April 25. The show was held in the school’s performing arts center.

“It’s a chance for our students to perform in a less formal concert, choir, concert band, or symphony orchestra setting,” Matt Sullivan said. “If they want to do a comedy routine, or if they want to do a solo, this night allows them to be a little bit more relaxed and have fun with music.

Every year, the show opens with the jazz band and closes with the show choir. Aside from that, the acts that fall in the meat of the show are different every year.

“Some people might want to write their own poem and recite it on stage,” Sullivan said. “We actually have a rock band, which is nice because it seems like they’re becoming more rare these days.”

Masters of Ceremonies (MC) for the variety show were La Porte High School staff members, Brenda Cooper and Erin Parker. The stage crew consisted of Lottie Cooley, Bailey Emerick and Emily Tharp.

While a variety show can seem similar to a talent show, Sullivan believes this event is a great way for everyone to walk away winners, proud of their performances.

“We still have people who refer to it as a talent show, but we call it a variety show because there’s no winner or loser,” Sullivan said. “Nobody is compared to each other, because a lot of these performances are so different from one another. Our MC’s, Ms. Parker and Mrs. Cooper, always do a great job. It’s even fun for the teachers because some of them are performing today and doing a TikTok challenge.”

The show was sponsored by the Slicer Performing Arts Club, a parent group that helps raise money for band, choir, orchestra, and theater at La Porte High School.

”They’re the ones who are selling tickets at the door and have helped spread the word. Between them, our theater students, drama kids, choir directors, stage crew, band and orchestra directors, and our awesome Performing Arts Center Director Tim Hanson, we have an incredible group here that made this show possible.”

The Spring Variety Show was loaded with talented, exhilarating acts including:

Jazz Band – “Welcome to the Jungle”

Halyn Pumroy – “Your Daddy’s Son”

Madelyn Crawford – “Thorns”

Mr. Stewart – “Come Fly With Me”

Hard Copy – “The Night Begins to Shine”

Molly Cooper – “On My Own”

Henry Denger – “Tropical Midwest” by the Uke King

Elise Eldridge – “Reflections”

Emily DeGarmo – “Heather”

Jaden Medina – “Desesperado”

Varsity Dance Team – “I Look Good”

Mrs. Brown – “Peter Pan”

Madison Davis – “Tiny Star”

Layna Hannon – “Spring Into Summer”

With the Spring Variety Show being one of the last performances at La Porte High School for the academic year, the message it conveys to create a family-friendly atmosphere for everyone in attendance is what keeps people coming back. Whether it’s the vocals, poetry, or even the ukulele, there’s something in this show that everyone can appreciate.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the audience having a good time,” Sullivan said. “Hopefully everyone can laugh and cry in a good way and enjoy the live performances.”
