Laredo Regional Food Bank hosts 41st Annual Rice and Beans Luncheon

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – As part of World Food Day, one local nonprofit is marking the occasion here at home.

The Laredo Regional Food Bank held its 41st Annual Rice and Beans Luncheon.

The luncheon helped honor volunteers who have helped with the food bank’s efforts to fight hunger as well as raise awareness for those who go hungry in our community.

Those who attended were given plates of rice and beans, a symbol for the communities the food bank aims to help.

Laredo Regional Food Bank Administrative Assistant Linda Saldivar told us, “The main reason it is rice and beans is that–why is it that people who are low-income families, what is it that is easy to find? Cheaper? The rice and the beans, which right now, as food prices are going up, even chicken, even ground beef is expensive.”

The food bank says that an upcoming project with the city will involve creating food pantries inside city rec centers.
