Le Moyne basketball gets rude welcome to D-I, blown out by Georgetown

Washington — Le Moyne College got a rude welcome to Division I men’s basketball on Tuesday night, falling 94-57 to Georgetown here at Capital One Arena.

The milestone moment for Le Moyne was celebrated during a pre-game ceremony at midcourt, when Georgetown President John DeGioia presented Le Moyne President Linda LeMura with a commemorative ball.

It was one of the precious few celebrations that an overmatched Le Moyne team was able to enjoy.

The Georgetown roster featured seven players who were ranked as three- or four-star recruits by 247Sports out of high school.

Le Moyne’s roster during its first D-1 season, composed entirely from players who couldn’t be guaranteed an opportunity to play Division I during their recruitment by the Dolphins, did not have any.

Supreme Cook, Georgetown’s strong post presence and an All-MAAC Third-Team player with Fairfield last season, led Georgetown with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He missed just one of his nine shots.

Like Le Moyne, Georgetown was celebrating a debut.

Long-time Providence coach Ed Cooley was on the Hoyas bench for the first time. He became the first leader outside of the John Thompson coaching tree since The Toweled One coached in his first year with the Hoyas in 1972.

Georgetown went 7-25 last year under Patrick Ewing, prompting a regime change for the Hoyas and a dramatic reshaping of their roster.

Georgetown took control early, building a 47-23 halftime edge. When the Hoyas pushed their lead to 20 points for the first time, Cooley came out to halfcourt and urged Georgetown fans to their feet, generating the first in-game standing ovation of his tenure.

Le Moyne was led by Kaiyem Cleary, who scored 11 points despite foul trouble that limited him to 23 minutes.

The Dolphins’ welcome to the world of Division I basketball continues on Friday, when Le Moyne plays at Villanova. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
