Letters: Supporting LNG is supporing Louisiana innovation

Contrary to past commentary demonizing the natural gas industry, liquefied natural gas has proven to be an innovative solution to address climate change, while delivering vast benefits to our state, nation and world. Curtailing LNG development could hinder our trajectory to reach global climate goals and adversely impact the growth of local communities across the Pelican State.

Transitioning from coal to LNG is a long-term solution as it emits 40% less carbon dioxide across the board. It is not realistic to solely rely on wind and solar without the complement of strong baseload power, which renewables do not supply.

LNG projects are approved and monitored by our nation’s experts, ensuring safety and environmental protection. That’s why I’ve been supportive of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, permitting reform, and local primacy for carbon capture and sequestration.

Venture Global LNG’s proposed Calcasieu Pass 2 project received a positive Federal Environmental Impact Statement from FERC earlier this summer, which brings them one step closer to a final vote by the commission in the coming weeks. If the project is approved to move forward, commencement of construction later this year will bring thousands of jobs to the state and be another economic boost to the Southwest Region of Louisiana.

The energy industry is home to our nation’s best problem solvers, and I’ve seen firsthand how local communities have improved with LNG’s expansion. Louisianans should be supported in our ability to innovate and not be deterred by unfounded attacks from paid out-of-town activists.

The buildout of LNG has positively supported our local communities, providing Louisianans with high-paying dependable jobs, affordable energy and tax revenue that funds our healthcare, schools and law enforcement. As a life-long Louisianan, I’m proud to see my state thrive and demonstrate American innovation and excellence.
