Lexington Catholic’s Doyle signs with men’s basketball

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lexington Catholic (Ky.) High School standout Tyler Doyle has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Bellarmine University men’s basketball team, Coach Scott Davenport announced Wednesday.

Doyle is a 6-foot-5 combo guard who has played varsity basketball since the eighth grade, first at Woodford County (Ky.) High School before transferring to Lexington Catholic his junior year.

“Tyler is a complete basketball player! Coming from an outstanding program at Lexington Catholic, he not only understands the game but equally important he understands what it takes to be successful in the classroom and on the court,” Davenport said. “We are excited to coach/teach Tyler! He embraces opportunity, a special trait we admire.”

Last season, Doyle averaged 10.3 points, 4.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game for Lexington Catholic while shooting 53 percent from the floor, 37 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free-throw line.

“I chose Bellarmine because the coaching staff truly cares about you and wants you to succeed not only in basketball but in life as well,” Doyle said. “Also, the players and everyone in the program is really fun to be around and everyone likes and cares about each other.”

Last season, Doyle was named MVP of the White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic and was recognized on the Kentucky Class 2A All-Tournament Team and the 11th Region All-Tournament Team. He helped lead his squad to a 32-3 season in which the Knights advanced to the regional finals and, earlier in the year, were the runner-up in the Kentucky 2A Championship.

“Tyler is an exceptional player and even better person,” Lexington Catholic Coach Brandon Salsman said. “His parents have done an incredible job raising a very talented but grounded young man. At 6-5, his skills as a point guard are rare. His size gives him the ability to make the tough pass and have incredible court vision. He can guard any spot on the floor and is a great scorer. Truly one of the best players in the state of Kentucky this year.”

Salsman’s comments about Doyle are precisely the traits he wants to translate to Bellarmine once he suits up for the college version of the Knights.

“When I get to Bellarmine, I want to be someone that can do it all when on the court, whether it’s on the offensive or defensive side of the ball,” Doyle said. “I plan to put on more muscle, and with my height, it will make me a lot more versatile and be able to play different roles.”
