Many of you may have heard of Diwali. You may have also heard that people throughout India light candles on the night of Diwali. But did you know that on the same day, Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Diwas and also light candles?

When translated, Bandi Chhor Diwas, means “Prisoner Liberation Day.” It was on that day that the Sikhs sixth spiritual teacher, Guru Hargobind Ji, was liberated from Gwalior Fort and led 52 kings, who were kept as prisoners, to freedom along with him. It was when Guru Hargobind Ji arrived back at home with the kings that candles were lit, and he displayed how one can liberate their mind from bondage by illuminating the light from within.
