Lifestyle briefs | 1919 ‘Valley of the Giants’ to be shown

Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead Festival of Altars will be celebrating its fifth year on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Old Town Gazebo in Eureka.

This is a free community event to commemorate ancestors, honor Latinx heritage and celebrate traditions. There will be food, music, ritual, dance and free face painting. All nations are welcome to this family oriented event.

‘Valley’ film

For the first time in 104 years, “The Valley of the Giants,” a 1919 romantic silent movie that was filmed in Humboldt County, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4, at the Eureka Theater, 612 F St.

This is a benefit for the Eureka Heritage Society, and admission is $20. Tickets are available online at Eventbrite.com and at the door.

With filming locations in Eureka, Arcata and Korbel, the movie is based on Peter B. Kyne’s 1918 novel of the same name. Presumed lost for 90 years, it was rediscovered in a Russian film vault in 2010.

“This is the first time it has been publicly shown since 1919,” said Chuck Petty, president of the board of directors of the Heritage Society. “Quite a few people have told me they have seen it already, and it turned out they were talking about the 1927 version.”

Live musical accompaniment with sound effects will be performed by SqueezeBug, a three-piece ensemble headed by Lorna and Stephen Brown.

Annual walk

Centro del Pueblo, Humboldt County’s nonprofit for the empowerment of the Latinx and Indigenous peoples from the South, is set to host its annual walk from Fortuna to Eureka on Saturday, Nov. 4.

This event — which started in 2018 — is designed to underscore the vital role of immigrants in Humboldt County while advocating for their rights.

The walk starts at St. Joseph Church, 810 14th St., Fortuna, at 5 a.m. And ends at the Gazebo in Old Town Eureka between 3 and 4 p.m. There will be food during the walk, as well as Aztec & Hermana Flor dances and mariachis at the Gazebo in Old Town.

Community members are invited to join the walk, participate in the celebration or support through donations at http://cdpueblo.com/donate.
