Folk dancing
The Humboldt Folk Dancers invite the public to a live music “International Folk Dance Party” Friday from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Redwood Raks World Dance Studio, 824 L St. in Arcata.
The event features easy dances and an evening of international music with Chubritza. All ages and dance levels are welcome. For more information, call 707-496-6734 or go to humboldtfolkdancers.org.
Marsh trip
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Gary Friedrichsen at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy-to-walk trails and an opportunity to view a diverse range of species. Shorebirds can especially be abundant at this time of year, so be on the lookout for avocets, sandpipers, yellow-legs, godwits, curlews and multi-species murmurations as well as the waterfowl species that call the marsh home in the winter.
Rock benefit
Uncoded Studio will present “Let’s Rock! Rock With Me (I Want To Rock With You),” a rock benefit installation by Erica Botkin, during Arts Alive! Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 510 Third St., Unit C, Eureka.
Botkin was born and raised in Humboldt County where explorations brought her to examine infinite wonders, big and small, alive and inanimate. “Let’s Rock! Rock With Me (I Want To Rock With You)” shares an installation of stones collected and polished by the artist.
Botkin earned degrees from College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) before attending the University of Texas at Austin. She returned to Humboldt County in late 2013.
The show will be available for public viewing for one night only; private collectors may talk to the artist for inquiries to purchase.
Dance party
A dance party with live music and “a great floor” will take place Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road, Eureka. Admission is $9.
Weavers meet
The Humboldt Handweavers and Spinners will meet Nov.9 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Bay Room at the Wharfinger Building, 1 Marina Way, Eureka.
The November meeting features a program on “Doormats and Baskets from Recycled Crab Rope” presented by David and Maya Cooper of Humboldt County’s Seaside Weavers. The presentation will include demonstration of weaving doormats from old crab rope that would otherwise be discarded, using a loom that Seaside Weavers designed and built especially for this purpose.
The Coopers will share the story of their inspiration to create this art form. If time permits, they will also show how they construct baskets from old crab rope. The meeting is free and open to the entire community. Refreshments are available at 6:45 p.m.
Arts Day
The Humboldt Arts Council is hosting “Second Saturday Family Arts Day” Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Morris Graves Museum of Art, 636 F St., Eureka.
This monthly event is always free. Families are invited to participate together in this monthly art-making workshop that complements current exhibitions at the museum. These workshops are geared toward intergenerational learning and creating in a museum setting.
For everyone from beginners to art experts, Second Saturday Family Arts Day offers diverse opportunities for the whole family to view, understand, and interact with the exhibitions and art on view.
On Nov. 11, participants are invited to gather downstairs in the classroom for the day’s project with assistance and guidance from art educator Genevieve Kjesbu. This month, everyone will be creating colorful mixed-media wreaths, drawing inspiration from the changing autumn season. All materials will be supplied.
Suggested admission is $5 for adults; $2 for seniors (age 65 and over), military veterans and students with ID; and free for children 17 and under free, families with an EBT card and valid ID and museum members.
