Books for sale
Friends of the Redwood Libraries will hold a “Big Book Sale” Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Eureka Library, 1313 Third St. Friday’s sale is for members only, with memberships available at the door. Saturday’s sale is open to everyone.
Over the past few months, the Friends have received some outstanding collections as donations. This sale will feature some 10,000 books, including literary sets and a large number of books about baseball. Many of the books are in like-new condition. CDs and DVDs will also be available to purchase.
Cash sales are welcome, with small bills appreciated. Credit cards will be accepted for purchases over $5. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the entire Humboldt County Library system.
Grange breakfast
Humboldt Grange No. 501 will hold a “Spooktacular Community Breakfast” Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the grange hall, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka.
The menu includes scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage links or patties and all you can eat pancakes. Juice, coffee, tea or hot cocoa are served with meals. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Kids under 5 eat for free. Come in costume and get an extra treat.
Tour the dunes
The Friends of the Dunes will present a “Spooky Dunes Tour” Saturday, Oct. 27, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. starting at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center, 220 Stamps Lane in Manila, where maps will be available.
Follow the map and learn about the incredible biodiversity and ecology of the dunes. Complete the quest to find a treasure to take home. Costumes are strongly encouraged.
This is a free, Spanish bilingual event geared for families with young children ages 3 to 10. Come prepared for the weather and a short hike in soft sand. RSVP is recommended, but not required, by contacting Friends of the Dunes at 707-444-1397 or [email protected].
Concert planned
Musicians from One Century will play instruments from two centuries and music from three centuries during a concert Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 625 15th St., Eureka. Music from Bach, Handel, Geminiani and Dvorak will bring reflection and warmth to the fall season. Admission is free, though donations for the music are appreciated.
Quilters meet
The Redwood Empire Quilters Guild will meet Nov. 3 at the Humboldt Grange, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka. Social time begins at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting and program at 6 p.m.
The program will be presented by Helen Saunders and Jeanine Norrish, who will discuss several ways of paper piecing, followed by two classes with two types of paper piecing to be held Nov. 3 and 4 at the Freshwater Grange. For more information, call Lynne Todoroff at 707-601-9618.
