Lifestyle briefs | Fungi walk planned in Del Norte County park

Film showing

A locally made documentary, “Tending the Garden,” will be shown at 6:30 and 8 p.m. tonight at the Miniplex, 900 Samoa Blvd., Arcata.

This 54-minute film is a journey through a year in the life of three family farms cultivating cannabis, food and community in the pursuit of a regenerative future. This film is directed by Claire Weissbluth, a documentary filmmaker born and raised in the hills of Humboldt County, and Jesse Dodd, creator of Biovortex, a living conceptual art piece with the goal of influencing the cannabis industry in the direction of a profitable and environmentally regenerative future.
Food and drinks can be purchased at the bar to bring in the theater, but no outside food or beverages are allowed. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at https://tending-the-garden.ticketleap.com/richards-goat/.

Digital concert

The Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival will present a digital concert with festival founder and pianist Ian Scarfe. “Travels with Chopin — Part One” takes place tonight at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

The program will feature works by Frédéric Chopin, each paired with a work by another composer. Scarfe will share stories of the music and a “behind the scenes” look at what makes this music engaging. Audience members will be encouraged to join the discussion after the performance, with time set aside for a live Q&A session.

The suggested contribution is $20 per household. To purchase tickets and get the Zoom link, go to https://www.ianscarfe.com/.

The Digital Concert series is being integrated into Scarfe’s new Practice Room Patrons project. To learn more, go to the website above.

Marsh field trip

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Dan Greaney at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy-to-walk trails and an opportunity to view a diverse range of species. Shorebirds can especially be abundant this time of year, so be on the lookout for avocets, sandpipers, yellow-legs, godwits, curlews and multi-species murmurations as well as the waterfowl species that call the marsh home in the winter.

Birding tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour along the Eureka Waterfront Trail on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m., with leader Ralph Bucher.

This relatively urban trail offers the potential to observe species abundance and diversity compared to many more remote locations. Keep an eye and ear out for cormorants, loons, grebes and even otters diving for their meals in the bay alongside the trail.

This walk is on a flat, paved trail that is wheelchair accessible. Email Ralph to sign up for this field trip at [email protected].

A Swedish pancake breakfast will be served Sunday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road, Eureka. The cost is $10.

Fungi walk

The Redwood Parks Conservancy, California State Parks and the National Park Service will present an all-abilities “Fungi Walk” Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. along the north side of the accessible Lieffer Trail on Walker Road off of State Route 199 in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Crescent City.

This will be a family friendly scavenger hunt bingo game for a variety of mushrooms and other fun forest finds. Practice using technology with the SEEK app to identify fungi and other plants or creatures along the path. There will be the opportunity to hook up “The Music of the Plants” device to a mushroom to listen to the electromagnetic energy of the mushroom transferred into sound waves, as well as the sounds of redwood trees.

This event is being held rain or shine. RSVP to attend via https://www.facebook.com/Redwoodparks/.

This walk is part of Redwood Parks Conservancy’s Experience Nature is a project aimed at providing fun, engaging activities in Redwood National & State Parks for people of all abilities.
