Lifestyle Lookout: Sunnyland Garden Party, Skagit Wood Expo, a heavy metal show and more this weekend

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – If the cherry blossoms are any indication, spring has finally sprung in Whatcom County. The forecast for the next few days looks great, with ample sunshine and warm temperatures.

What better way to celebrate the return of spring than at the Sunnyland Garden Party. This annual event runs from noon on Friday, April 4 to Sunday, April 6 at 9 p.m. It will be a full weekend of new beers, fun food specials, live music and more in one of Bellingham’s quirkiest neighborhoods. Dress in your finest “garden attire” as you and your friends crawl from brewery to brewery tasting some of the finest beers in the Pacific Northwest. This year’s Garden Party comes with some added excitement. Stemma Brewing recently opened a second location at the old Twin Sisters location and Otherlands Beer was recently named one of the ten best brewpubs in the United States.

Warmer weather means it is time to get to work on all those projects you have been putting off this winter. If wood is what you are looking for, head south to Skagit County.

The Third Annual Skagit Wood Expo and Marketplace is this Saturday and Sunday at the Skagit County Fairgrounds. This year’s event will feature live woodworking, carving, sawmilling demonstrations and an artisan marketplace with over 50 local vendors.

There will be fun for the whole family as well. Saturday’s lineup includes a bingo bash, line dancing and a circus show. Then on Sunday, there will be an egg hunt followed by the live wood auction.

In his poem The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot famously claimed that “April is the cruelest month,” and what better way to ponder that sentiment then at a good old-fashioned heavy metal show?

Our featured live show this week is at the Shakedown and features one of Bellingham’s best metal bands. Melancholia will explore “dread and anguish in all its malformed glory” with their pummeling drums, ferocious guitars and blistering vocals.

Opening for Melancholia is Bog Ore and Witch Agony. Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 9 p.m. Go to shakedownbellingham.com for tickets.
