Lindsay Lohan delivers a pot of cinematic gold in EW’s exclusive trailer for her upcoming Netflix movie Irish Wish, which previews a nostalgic return to classic LiLo energy as the actress gets back into the rom-com groove.
Set amid the rolling green seaside hills of Ireland (and appropriately soundtracked by regional pop band The Corrs’ “Breathless”), the Irish Wish trailer (below) centers Lohan in the tale of Maddie, a young lovelorn woman who travels to Europe for her best friend’s wedding to the man Maddie thinks she loves — which, naturally, turns into a ceremony from hell when a mystic wish leads Maddie to swap lives (but not bodies — this isn’t Freaky Friday!) with her pal the next morning when she wakes up in the same bed as her romantic interest.
Things seemingly go Maddie’s way until she runs into the street in a wedding dress and tumbles into a red convertible (get in, loser, we’re going wishing) driven by a handsome photographer, James (Outlander and Downton Abbey‘s Ed Speleers), whose magnetic presence forces Maddie to reassess her commitment to her upcoming nuptials.
Irish Wish’s first trailer not only teases the film’s engaging narrative, but it also sees Lohan engaging with more straightforward rom-com vibes — outside of the holiday niche shrouding 2022’s Falling for Christmas, that is — with the actress feeling right at home amid her latest feature-length turn in ways audiences haven’t seen in years.
“It’s a nice story of luck and love and confidence,” Lohan, who also executive-produced the project, recently said of the film via statement on Netflix’s press site. “Maddie’s [one of the only] characters that I’ve played [who’s] a woman on her own making her way in the world. We shaped her in a way that she was a bit more insecure in the beginning, and then she grows throughout the movie, and by the end, she really comes into her own.”
The film — directed by Lohan’s Falling for Christmas helmer Janeen Damian — marks the latest in Lohan’s multi-picture deal with Netflix, which also includes the upcoming Yuletide comedy Our Little Secret, in which Lohan will reunite with her Mean Girls costar Tim Meadows.
After attempting to become a nightlife mogul in Greece (a career offshoot documented in MTV’s 2019 reality series Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club), Lohan’s first leading role in a major-studio production in nearly a decade came via Falling for Christmas, with the film receiving positive reviews and landing among Netflix’s self-reported list of 10 most-viewed titles upon its initial release in November 2022.
Irish Wish, also starring Alexander Vlahos, Ayesha Curry, and Jane Seymour, premieres March 15 on Netflix. Watch EW’s exclusive trailer for the new movie above.
