Lionsgate Launches Alternative TV Division With eOne Assets, Hires Dirk Hoogstra

Lionsgate is bringing eOne’s unscripted assets together with its own non-fiction division after closing its $375M deal for the company.

It is launching Lionsgate Alternative Television, which will incorporate its own Pilgrim Media Group, with eOne’s U.S. and U.K. non-scripted groups, Blackfin, Renegade and Daisybeck Studios.

It has also hired former History Channel boss Dirk Hoogstra to lead the eOne U.S. label. This comes after Deadline revealed that Hoogstra was leaving Half Yard Productions, the Peter Chernin-owned company behind TLC’s Say Yes To The Dress, at the end of last year.

The move comes two years after it put Pilgrim Media Group’s Craig Piligian in charge of its unscripted television business. Piligian will oversee Lionsgate Alternative Television as managing director.

All of the eOne labels will remain intact including Naked & Afraid producer Renegade, Blackfin, which produced Netflix’s Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, The Yorkshire Vet producer Daisybeck and eOne UK, which is behind MTV’s Ex On The Beach.

Lionsgate Alternative Television’s management team will include Pilgrim Media Group’s President & COO Gretchen Stockdale and Chief Current Officer & GM Nicholas Caprio, while Renegade bosses David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe will serve as Senior Executives on the team.

Tom Huffman for Pilgrim, Bob Kusbit for Renegade, Geno McDermott for Blackfin, Matt Pritchard, Matt Walton and Malcolm Gerrie for eOne U.K. and Paul Stead for Daisybeck will report into the management team on the creative side, along with Hoogstra. Lionsgate Alternative Television will also collaborate with the eOne Canada team, led by Jocelyn Hamilton.

“The launch of Lionsgate Alternative Television marks another key milestone in the expansion of our global television footprint,” said Lionsgate Television Group Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Kevin Beggs. “As a major force in the non-scripted programming world, Craig is the perfect executive to take our unscripted operations to the next level.”
