Lizzo Condemns Offensive Banners at the BottleRock Music Festival

Saturday, when rapper Lizzo was performing at the BottleRock Napa Valley event, she talked about some offensive signs she saw on her way there. She called them out when she was talking about the title track of her upcoming record, Special.

On May 27, Lizzo made history by being the first Black woman musician to be the main act at the BottleRock Napa Valley event. During her performance, she talked about some signs she had seen at the event that were mean to people like her. “I saw some signs that were very unfriendly towards people like me,” she said.

She kept pointing out signs that were meant for people like her. “I saw signs talking about how they want to cancel people like me. Silence people like me,” she said. Silence people like me. “Choke people like me. And they are right across the street. So we gonna sing this one more time so they can hear it because maybe they haven’t heard it in a long time.”

Reports say that a sign in front of a house near the event said things like “Choke the Woke” and other hurtful things.

The British band Duran Duran joined the rapper during her more than an hour-long show. The About Damn Time singer wrapped herself in the LGBTQ+ flag and said, “Drag is not a crime!” to show her fans that it was still a “safe space.”

The BottleRock Napa Valley music event lasted three days, and Wu-Tang Clan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and rapper Lil Nas X played there.
