A mid-Michigan health department is joining the global celebration of “Pride Month” next month.
The Central Michigan District Health Department, which serves six counties including Isabella and Clare, is taking part in recognizing and honoring the LGBTQ+ community, its history, and struggles and triumphs.
Steve Hall, CMDHD health officer, said Pride Month is more than a party or parade.
“Pride Month is a time for reflection, celebration and advocacy,” he said. “It’s a reminder of the progress we’ve made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, but it’s also a call to action to continue fighting for equality and inclusion for all.”
Pride Month traces its roots back to the Stonewall riots in June 1969, when the LGBTQ+ community – particularly transgender people of color – stood up against police brutality and discrimination, which sparked a movement that helped pave the way for greater acceptance, equality and rights worldwide, Hall said, adding that CMDHD stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
“We believe in creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Hall said. “We recognize the importance of addressing the unique health needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and strive to provide culturally competent and affirming care to all members of our community.
“We offer educational sessions to advise the community – including students, parents and healthcare professionals – about inclusiveness.”
Hall said the health department’s community health education request form can be found at https://forms.office.com/g/K2Jw9qRHi.
As Pride Month is celebrated, Hall said the community should take a moment to reflect on the challenges that the LGBTQ+ people continue to face.
Discrimination and lack of access to affirming healthcare services continue to be significant barriers to LGBTQ+ health and well-being, Hall said.
According to a recent study by the Human Rights Campaign, more than 50 percent of LGBTQ+ youth experience bullying, anxiety and depression because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, Hall said.
Local events presented by Great Lakes Bay Pride during Pride Month include “Pop Up Pride in the Park” that’s set for June 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Broadway Park, 2451 Nish Na Be Anong Road in Mt. Pleasant; and an open house at the Mt. Pleasant Pride Center, 201 S. University Ave, from 5 to 7 p.m. June 1.
The National LGBTQ Task Force is celebrating 50 years of freedom, justice and equity for LGBTQ+ people; to learn more about the organization, and its mission, go to www.thetaskforce.org.
Education, advocacy and support are key to working together to create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone can live authentically and thrive, Hall said, adding that CMDHD is committed to being a trusted ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and encourages all to join in promoting acceptance during Pride Month and beyond.
