Local links: Rangers great Ivan ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez to play in Invited Celebrity Classic


Rangers legend and National Baseball Hall of Fame member Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez didn’t waste any time. He has committed to play in the Invited Celebrity Classic next April at Las Colinas Country Club, the tournament announced.

“I can’t wait to return to the Las Colinas Country Club with some of the best golfers, athletes and entertainers in the world,” said Rodriguez, who has been a fixture at the event that features pro athletes and celebrities playing in a modified Stableford tournament alongside 78 PGA Tour Champions players.

Rodriguez finished 27th in the field of 40 athletes and celebrities. Tony Romo won the celebrity tournament. Mark Hensby won a playoff with Charlie Wi in the PGA Tour Champions event.

Thanks to support from sponsors Invited, Energy Transfer and Choctaw Casinos & Resorts, grounds tickets will be complimentary for the third-year event to be held April 19-21.

Women’s golf clinic set for Nov. 28

A SHE Golfs clinic for women interested in learning about playing golf will be held Tuesday, Nov. 28 at The Courses at Watters Creek in Plano.

The grassroots SHE Golfs tour was created by Travelers insurance company. Similar events have been held in Charlotte, N.C.; Seattle; and Connecticut.

The clinic from 2-5 p.m. includes a 90-minute range instruction session, two holes of play, instruction on course etiquette and a rules overview. It is open to approximately 20 participants.

Three assistant pros representing the Northern Texas PGA made the cut at the Assistant PGA Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Corbin Renner of Shady Oaks CC tied for 20th, Spencer Dillard of Preston Trail tied for 41st and Dustin Nelson of Cross Timbers Golf Course tied for 56th. … The Brookhaven Country Club in the 17-and-under PGA Jr. League Championship did not advance to the semifinals after tying for ninth in the qualifying rounds. The team representing Virginia won the inaugural event.
