Louisville makes list for top destinations to travel in 2024

Travel + Leisure magazine is recognizing Louisville as one of the top places in the world to travel in 2024, alongside destinations such as Paris, Bangkok, Cleveland, and Las Vegas.There are several reasons Louisville made the list, including the excitement surrounding the 150th Kentucky Derby.Katrina Helmer, the director of communications for the Kentucky Derby Museum, says the rich history, fashion, and unique experiences continue to attract visitors to the event from near and far.“This sporting event has grown up with the city, with the Commonwealth,” said Helmer, “So many people look to the Kentucky Derby as the pinnacle of racing and not only want to be a part of that and hope to win the trophy every single year but to attend this event. It’s a cultural icon.”Shows like “Ali,” a musical at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, are also one of the most anticipated performances next year. Staff says there’s a reason some of the top artists in the country come to Louisville to perform.“It’s a real honor to be included in that listing, but it’s also an affirmation of the work that has been going on for decades that speaks to the rich cultural, artistic history that we have in this city,” said Christian Adelberg, Kentucky Performing Arts.Louisville Tourism says it’s the new thrills and rich traditions that make the Derby City stand out.“Whether it’s the bourbon industry, whether it’s Churchill, whether it’s Muhammad Ali. This community continues to thrive in the tourism space,” said Cleo Battle, the president and CEO of Louisville Tourism, “Ten years ago, we were a seasonal destination for leisure visitors. Now, it is all year long. Folks want to come. They want to have that experience.”
