After only winning four games last season under new head coach Kenny Payne, the Louisville Cardinals are starting the new season with a win.The Cardinals hosted the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers Monday night for the season opener, beating them 94-93.Louisville was down by as much as 13, but were able to rally in the second half and hold on by a thread to pull out the win.Mike James came up huge for Louisville, leading the Cardinals in scoring with 25 points and snagging 10 rebounds.Skyy Clark and Tre White both pitched in 11 points, with White contributing nine rebounds as well.UofL struggled from three-point range Monday night, shooting an abysmal 14.3%. But they made it up, shooting 50% from the field and 61.5% from the free throw line.JJ Traynor put the Cardinals up 94-92 with a dunk as the game was coming down to the final seconds.And this game came down to the final seconds, with UMBC missing a free throw and UofL stopping the Retrievers until the clock expired.Louisville is on the different side of history this year, winning the season opener by one point.The Cardinals are back in action at the KFC Yum! Center hosting Chattanooga on Friday at 7 p.m.
