Lovesac’s latest innovation raises profile of a signature product

STAMFORD, Conn. — Calling it one of the first major innovations in the Sac line in a decade, Top 100 retailer Lovesac is introducing its new PillowSac accent chair on May 21.

The chair combines the Stamford, Conn.-based furniture maker and retailer’s signature Sacs with a solid blonde oak chair frame, can be found in showrooms or online and starts at $675.

Founder and CEO Shawn Nelson told Furniture Today that, by adding the frame, Lovesac is creating a seating solution fit for most every setting.

“Lovesac is largely responsible for making giant beanbag chairs a fixture even worthy of the living room but it’s not necessarily worthy of every living room,” Nelson said. “The PillowSac is the most tailored of our designs. It’s controlled and modern and now getting it up off the floor to a standard seat height really elevates the PillowSac to play in living room settings.”

In addition to selecting from more than 150 machine-washable, changeable covers, customers can customize the accent chair in the form of hardware finishes and strap options. Hardware is available in brushed brass, gunmetal gray or brushed nickel; and straps in black or tan webbing.

“We didn’t just make an accent chair with our name on it. We took a classic Lovesac product and made it accent chair-able,” Nelson said.

Nelson said in the developmental period, Lovesac refined angles and depth on the chair to make sure it was right. He said that fit in with the company’s “Designed For Life” ethos.

“We refuse to make products that don’t live up to the Designed For Life framework in a significant way. That’s why it takes us a long time to launch things. We probably went through a dozen designs on the joinery for this product to make it so reliable that we felt it could last a lifetime,” he said. “There’s a lot that goes unseen and unappreciated for a product like this. We could have put it out on draft one or two, and it would have bene fine, but fine isn’t good enough for Lovesac.”

Nelson said Lovesac is already getting requests for different sizes and use cases, and he can see the PillowSac expanding beyond accent chairs.

“We view the PillowSac accent frame as another platform that can grow and adapt in ways that people don’t know or haven’t imagined yet,” he said. “Leaving that open to interpretation is always fun and should be the way the careful observer views Lovesac rather than a singular product.”
