There was quite a splash five years ago with the opening of the burger chain Five Guys in the upmarket SoCoDu village of Blackrock. Its location was a prime road fronting unit in the redeveloped Frascati Shopping Centre, which already had, and still has, a very popular branch of the much cheaper opposition — Mickey D’s, which every young fella and girl attending the nearby Blackrock College and Sion Hill College pretty well grew up on for the last 30 years.
The Five Guys franchise was brought to Ireland by Brett, Ross and Derry Desmond, the sons of billionaire financier Dermot Desmond, opening first in Belfast, with plans to open 10 branches in Dublin and major cities. Despite the hand-formed burgers, all-beef hot dogs, mineral top-ups, and a prime location, the yummy mummies were seemingly unprepared to shell out the extra euros and the Blackrock branch shut its doors. So, Five Guys became ‘Four Guys’, with branches in South Great George’s Street, Liffey Valley, Dundrum Town Centre and the Pavilions in Swords.
