Macomb Ballet Company opens its season with ‘The Nutcracker’

The Macomb Ballet Company will open its 41st season with five performances of “The Nutcracker” appearing Friday through Sunday at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts in Clinton Township.

For many families, attending the show is as traditional as eggnog and Christmas stockings.

“The Nutcracker is a timeless and iconic ballet that is a tradition not just for me personally, but also for the company and dancers, as well as for our patrons,” said Amber Megna Michalik, owner of the Ann Parsley School of Dance and artistic director for the Macomb Ballet Company (MBC).

Michalik said she enjoys performing this ballet every year — one reason being she and the company work very hard to keep things exciting and new for audiences.

“Every year my team evaluates how we can make changes that breathe new life into the production while also maintaining the essence of this beloved ballet,” Michalik said.

This year’s show will feature 68 dancers and about 25 extras.

“We have close to 100 people total, performing in the show, along with countless volunteers,” said the director of the company that provides performing experience for talented young dancers.

The company’s quality, community-based and youth oriented performances and formal concerts not only highlight local talent but provide reaching, educating and enriching opportunities for audiences throughout Southeast Michigan.

Over the years, Michalik has watched hundreds of serious dance students ages 8-19 to grow artistically through performance experience on a professional stage.

This season’s production welcomes principal guest artist Jonathan Carter in the role of the Cavalier and a beloved story that follows Clara on a magical adventure through the Enchanted Forest to the Kingdom of Sweets. Was it all a dream? Only Clara’s mysterious uncle, Herr Drosselmeyer, knows for sure.

“We are excited for new and returning audience members to experience the talent of our company and to be transported by this heartwarming adventure filled with colorful characters and festive delight,” Michalik said.
