BEECH GROVE, Ind. – A 19-year-old suspect faces numerous charges in connection with a police chase that followed a shooting at a pair of apartment buildings in Beech Grove.
Jamar Johnson is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon; intimidation; resisting law enforcement; and operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license.
Another teen is charged with a misdemeanor count of resisting law enforcement while a juvenile suspect was arrested on a misdemeanor count of resisting law enforcement.
The three individuals are not directly charged in connection with a shooting at a pair of Beech Grove apartment buildings on Feb. 15. But the car they were found in matched the description of a vehicle—a white Dodge Charger—seen leaving the area that morning. A 7-year-old girl and a teen girl were injured by gunfire.
Around 11:40 a.m. on Feb. 15, hours after the shooting, Beech Grove police spotted the Charger on Bethel Avenue. Officers attempted to stop it, but the Charger took off, accelerating at a “high rate of speed.”
At one point, according to court documents, the Charger was going 60 mph in a “dense residential zone” with a 20-mph speed limit. Eventually, the vehicle reached Emerson Avenue, hitting 100 mph in a 40-mph zone. The vehicle then struck a curb and a large rock, coming to rest in the parking lot of a Marathon gas station at 5060 Southeastern Ave.
Johnson and the two others got out of the vehicle. Police quickly apprehended two of the three; officers located Johnson with assistance from a drone after setting up a perimeter. He was found hiding in a back yard in the 1600 block of S. Emerson Avenue. One of the other suspects tossed aside a handgun before police caught him, according to court documents.
The Dodge Charger was registered to Johnson’s mother; Johnson told police they’d “made me wreck my mom’s car” and said, “If I hadn’t wrecked, y’all wouldn’t have caught me.”
According to court documents, Johnson directly threatened a police officer while in custody at the Beech Grove Department, looking directly at him and saying, “I’ll kill you.” He was upset that the officer wouldn’t give him his shoes, which is standard departmental procedure, court documents indicated.
The officer “stated he felt threatened by Johnson’s remark.” The incident led to an intimidation charge.
Inside the car, officers located a gun in the center console. Johnson has a previous felony conviction for robbery and is prohibited from having a firearm, police said. Two Glocks were discovered during the investigation; both had been reported stolen from a vehicle about three weeks ago.
Investigators also recovered a black ski mask and a blue stocking cap, along with some suspected marijuana, a glass pipe commonly used for smoking drugs and a pair of cell phones.
