Maine authors rally to support Lewiston shooting victims through book sales and signings

BRUNSWICK (WGME) – Mainers across the state are continuing to rally in support of the families of those we lost in last month’s mass shootings in Lewiston.

People in Maine are still healing from last month’s mass shootings in Lewiston and support continues to pour in for families of the victims.

Dozens of Maine authors came together Saturday to do their part.

“You want to do something. And you feel so powerless, and you want to do more than just write a check and so I think all of us felt like we could take our work,” said author Maria Padian. “And that’s one way that we can support.”

Maria Padian was at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, one of 10 libraries using this space to host book signings, meet the authors, and a chance to purchase their books.

Authors decided to donate most or all proceeds of their novels to these three charities: Central Maine Medical Center Compassionate Care Fund, the City of Lewiston Support Fund, and the Maine Community Foundation.

Padian wrote a novel based on Lewiston several years ago.

“This really hit me,” said Padian. “I know so many kids and so many young people from this town.”

Rick Wile is an author himself and is here to purchase books for the cause.

“I like to read and it’s for a good cause,” said Wile.

He’s no stranger to grief; Wile says he lost his own daughter to cancer.

“There’s no answer to why some of these things happen,” said Wile. “So, the thing I learned myself was you don’t ask why, you just ask for help. I’ve received help in my life, and I would like to help other people as well,” he said.

Authors here hope this event can be therapeutic during this difficult time.

“Artists are often called upon to respond and help people put things into words and process their feelings,” said author Kate Kearns.

These authors want the legacies of the 18 lives lost to carry on.

“All of us are going to walk away and go about our lives,” said Padian. “But for this community, it’s going to go on for a very very long time, so I hope people don’t forget.”
