Man hit trooper with car door in Syracuse after being asked to pull over, troopers say

Syracuse, N.Y. — A man hit a state trooper with his car door Sunday morning on Syracuse’s South Side after he was asked to pull over, troopers said.

Trooper John Zayas Jr. requested the man, Mekhi A. Flagg, 26, pull over after seeing he was on his cell phone, Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a spokesperson for the State Police, said in a news release. Zayas was running an occupant safety checkpoint around 10 a.m. Sunday at East Calthrop Avenue and the Interstate 81 northbound ramp, she said.

Flagg refused to stop, striking Zayas with his car door before driving off, Jiron said. Zayas fell and injured his right hand and arm, she said.
