A Harrisburg man is charged, through free on unsecured bail, in a case where he’s accused of paying a woman for a sex act and then shooting her car at a motel in York nearly two weeks ago.
David Butts, 66, of Harrisburg, was charged Monday with attempted aggravated assault, simple assault and patronizing a prostitute.
The case followed an investigation which also led to the woman’s arrest on prostitution and other charges, while Butts was reportedly injured in a crash before he could formally speak to police.
He was preliminarily arraigned Wednesday and bypassed jail as district Judge Jeffrey Oberdorf set a $75,000 unsecured bail for him, court documents show.
“Unsecured” in these cases means an amount is set but defendants don’t have to pay it upfront to stay out of jail. If the person violates their bail conditions, like not showing up to court, they may be ordered to pay the amount.

The woman in the case, meanwhile — Brittany Abosede, 34, of Washington, D.C. — was arrested and jailed at York County Prison on a $5,000 bail for five days before she bonded out, according to court documents.
She and Butts both face initial court dates next month.
The case began when Northern York County Regional police responded to a call Abosede made, and they met her in the parking lot of the Days Inn along Arsenal Road early in the morning of Nov. 19.
She allegedly told police, at first, she was traveling from Washington to New York City and had stopped in the motel’s parking lot for a break. She allegedly said a man, Butts, came up to her car, cursing and waving a gun, and when she started to drive off, he shot the vehicle, according to charging documents.
Abosede also allegedly told police she saw the man flee into a room as she drove.
Investigators went to the room she pointed out and knocked on the door. Nobody answered, but police said they heard sounds from inside, charging documents show.
They then checked with hotel management and learned Butts had rented the room.

A detective spoke with Abosede again. At the same time, another officer contacted Butts somehow, and he allegedly said he was in Harrsisburg, according to charging documents.
Butts and Abosede both allegedly told police that he’d paid her to urinate on him in a bathtub in the motel room, with Abosede saying she received $300 for the act, charging document show.
According to the allegations, Abosede said that after the act, she went out to her car and snacked on potato chips. Butts told police he realized his wallet was missing from the motel room.
Butts went into the parking lot and confronted Abosede in her car, according to both accounts to police. Butts allegedly said he wanted his wallet back, but he panicked when he saw her reaching under her seat, believing she might be reaching for a gun, charging documents show.
Butts allegedly told police he didn’t recall firing his gun. He said found his wallet in the parking lot after Abosede drove off, investigators said in charging documents.
Abosede was taken into custody at the motel, and her car was seized, police said.
Investigators found a 9mm bullet cartridge casing in the lot where Abosede told police she was parked, according to charging documents.
Investigators, after later searching her car, said there was a bullet hole in the back door frame on the passenger side, indicating it was shot from the rear, charging documents show.
Since Butts allegedly told police he was in Harrisburg during their initial conversation, he indicated he would drive down to the Northern York police station in Dover and give a statement, according to charging documents.
However, police said he then was injured in a crash, which caused his vehicle to roll over, in Harrisburg.
Charging documents show investigators went to the crash scene. While there, police said they seized a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun that Butts had on him, as well as his phone, charging documents show.

Police had also seized Abosede’s phone when she was arrested and jailed, charging documents show.
She’s charged with misdemeanor counts of promoting prostitution, false informing, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft.
Butts was charged Monday, about a week after the incident. He faces two felony counts of attempted aggravated assault, two misdemeanor counts of simple assault along with reckless endangerment and patronizing a prostitute.
He and Abosede are both currently scheduled to appear before Judge Oberdorf on Jan. 4 for preliminary hearings in the case.
