Man suffers injuries as car sideswipes trees, hits one head on

BRAINERD — A single-vehicle crash left a Hackensack man with non-life-threatening injuries after his car left the road Wednesday, May 22.

The crash was reported at 10:39 a.m.

David William Christofferson, 59, was driving a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis north on Highway 64 in McKinley Township in Cass County. The Minnesota State Patrol reported the vehicle swerved to avoid a squirrel in the roadway, which resulted in the vehicle crossing over the southbound traffic lane, running off the roadway into the west ditch and sideswiping multiple trees. One tree was hit head on and the vehicle then came to a stop.

Christofferson was taken to CentraCare in St. Cloud. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Road conditions were dry at the time of the crash.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
