Margot Robbie Thinks Barbie Will Pave the Way for More Films Starring Women

Margot Robbie hopes that Barbie’s popularity will pave the way for more unique ventures, particularly those driven by women.

With the film grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide, she emphasized that a success does not necessarily have to manifest in sequels, prequels, or remakes, but the potential for never-before-seen stories should be pursued, with big budgets committed to support them.

“It’s really important that Barbie did well… As much as it is nice, it’s also really important that it does well so people can also in future have big, original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly.”

These quotes are from her recent interview at Variety’s Power of Women Gala, when she shattered hopes for a sequel by stating that the 2023 blockbuster was intended to be a solitary picture.

She went on to say that director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig had poured all into the film, so a sequel is simply impossible at this time.

“We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” she says, indicating that their team never intended to make a trilogy.
