After a Mugler collaboration set the influencerscape ablaze in March, H&M has finally unveiled its latest designer partnership: a collection with Paco Rabanne, which, this time around, includes a line of ultraglam homewares.
The foray into home feels like a full-circle moment for the Spanish fashion house, as Rabanne, who died earlier this year, studied architecture in Paris and designed furniture in the 1970s. Creative director Julien Dossena plumbed these archival works for inspiration. A paillette wall hanging, for instance, was directly inspired by an original Rabanne “space curtain,” and a metallic sheen radiates throughout the collection as a nod to one of his favorite materials. “Rabanne used metal to liberate,” says Dossena. “I love that idea. As a material, it seems to lend purity to a design.”
In addition to the glitzy curtain, collection highlights include a cube-shaped lamp, a cocktail shaker and glass, and a slanted vase that, as per Dossena, resembles the “leaning tower of Pisa.” The designer cites Helmut Newton photographs and ’70s pool parties as references, creating a timeless feeling that doesn’t dip too strongly into the past. “[Dossena] was very adamant from the start, as were we, that this collection shouldn’t be nostalgic,” says Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg, head of design and creative at H&M Home. “We wanted it to be modern, not retro, so that it could work in contemporary homes with different decoration styles.”
The collection, which marks the first time H&M has ever worked with a guest designer on a home line, will officially go on sale starting November 9. If the retailer’s previous partnerships are any indication, items will sell fast, so mark your calendars!
