Mary E. Bivins Foundation launches website for food insecure seniors in the Tx Panhandle

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Mary E. Bivins Foundation has launched an online resource to help food insecure seniors in the Texas Panhandle.

The Senior Hunger Solutions project can help seniors find food pantries, mobile, home-delivered and congregate meal options across the region, according to a press release. The website also highlights the growing problem of food insecurity by breaking down the number of older adults by county.

“We knew this was a critical issue that needed to be addressed further, so the Mary E. Bivins Foundation committed resources to enable an in-depth study of hunger and food insecurity among older adults living in the Texas Panhandle,” said Mary E. Bivins President and CEO Katharyn Wiegand.

The press release states the project began several years ago with the Amarillo Area Foundation, Harrington Cancer and Health Foundation, High Plains Christian Ministries Foundation and the Bivins Foundation.

The Senior Hunger Study identified the scope of hunger and food insecurity among seniors in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle.

The Senior Hunger Solutions website features dedicated pages for all 26 counties and provides a list of food resources for each county, says Program Officer Jessica Tudyk.

“Our hope is to provide senior adults an easy tool to find programs close to home,” said Wiegand. “It is a meaningful step toward solving a problem that affects several thousand of our elderly neighbors.”
