EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts tennis captured their first road win of the 2024 season, downing Providence 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Centre Court.
UMass completed a dominant performance in doubles and singles play, claiming victories in all three doubles contests in addition to the subsequent six singles matches.
To start the day, the Minutewomen gathered the doubles point with wins on courts No. 1, 2, and 3. The duo of Danielle Hack and Thamonpan Jonglertrakul took down the Friars’ Vannelie Melendez and Liria Loria 6-3, while Ella Faessler and Amelia Tye defeated Lauren Carson and Elisa Davalos of Providence, 6-2. The team of Mariya Krasakova and Polina Akimova sealed the clean sweep, winning over Providence’s Cami Barrera and Erika Beltran, 6-4.
In singles action, UMass’ momentum continued. Krasakova kicked off the action, garnering a 6-1, 6-0 win at court No. 4 above Carson of Providence. On court No. 3, Tye bested the Friars’ Mae Abreu, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman, Alexandra O’Brien claimed her first collegiate win at No. 6 singles in a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Davalos of Providence. On court No. 2, Jonglertrakul furthered Massachusetts’ stark lead, besting the Friars’ Vannelie Melendez, 6-4, 6-3. UMass rounded out the day, picking up the remaining two points at No. 5 and No. 1 singles. Akimova edged Providence’s Davalos 6-3, 6-2, while Faessler beat Barrera of the Friars, 6-4, 6-3.
The Minutewomen return to the Bay Road Tennis Center on Saturday, February 3 and Sunday, February 4 for a back-to-back home series against Quinnipiac and St. John’s. Play is set to begin at 1p.m. on both days.
