Mattel is giving the Barney franchise a new spin. The toy business intends to renew the well-known purple dinosaur with a new presence across television, film, YouTube, and children’s merchandise, including toys, books, and clothing.
According to the business, the revival of Barney is the latest instance of Mattel’s mining “amazing depth and breadth of its intellectual property collection to resurrect classic characters. The 1980s franchise Masters of the Universe has just received a similar treatment.
While Barney will be revamped for a new generation of children, Mattel will also release a line of adult products with the original form of the character for older admirers.
“Through content, products, and experiences, we will introduce the famous purple dinosaur to a new generation of children and families around the world, capitalizing on the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney and who are now parents themselves.” In a press release, Mattel’s chief franchise officer, Josh Silverman, stated the following:
“The relaunch will begin in 2024 with a new animated television series.”
A senior vice president and general manager of Mattel Television, Fred Soulie, stated, “It was crucial to us that the new series accurately reflect the world in which today’s children live to teach them valuable lessons about navigating it.”
“With our contemporary interpretation of Barney, we wish to encourage the next generation to listen, care, and dream big. We believe parents who fondly recall the original Barney from their childhoods will also enjoy the show.”
