Maverick Men’s Basketball Adds Three During Fall Signing Period – Minnesota State University


MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State men’s basketball coach Matt Margenthaler has announced three student-athletes will join the Maverick men’s basketball team in the fall of 2024.

All signings and transfers are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

“We are all thrilled to have all three of these young men joining our Maverick family,” Margenthaler said. 

Holden Arnaman, Colton Benson and Carson Schweim will join the Mavericks next fall.

A point guard from West Branch, Iowa, Holden Arnaman is a four-year starter with the West Branch High School boy’s basketball team. Arnaman received all-conference first team and all-area honors during his sophomore and junior seasons, to go along with All-State Second Team honors as a junior.

“Holden is a tenacious player on the court,” Margenthaler said. “He’s one of those guys that you are glad he’s on your team and not playing against. He’s possesses great ball skills and a great basketball IQ. “

Arnaman holds several school records, including three pointers made in a season (71), most three pointers in a game (nine), assists in a season (132). He also owns the career assists record with 309 and sits just 28 points away from 1,000 career points. Holden is the son of Stefanie Arnaman and intends to major in health and physical education at Minnesota State.

A guard from New Ulm, Minn., Colton Benson received all-conference honors as a sophomore and a junior at New Ulm High School. He was also named the all-journal boys basketball player of the year and the KNUJ boy’s basketball player of the year as he averaged 28.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting 47% from the field.

“Colton is a natural scorer inside and out,” Margenthaler said. “He has that ability to play multiple positions and his size and strength will help him right away.”

Benson helped his team to a pair of conference championships during his sophomore and junior seasons. As a junior he reached 1,000 career points. Colton is the son of Tami and Jason Benson and he plans to major in social work at Minnesota State.

A forward from Mankato, Minn., Carson Schweim helped lead the Mankato East boy’s basketball team to its first conference and section championship in the same season. Schweim received all-conference and all-city honors for his efforts during his junior year and was named the team’s MVP as he averaged 16.0 points, and 6.0 rebounds per game.

“Carson is a young man that can really stretch the court with his outside shooting ability,” Margenthaler said. “He has great size and athletic ability that will benefit him early on.”

 As a sophomore, Schweim helped his team to a third place finish at the state tournament. He also helped his team to a pair of section championships during his sophomore and junior seasons. Carson is the son of Audra and Doug Schweim and he intends to major in business. His sister Mackenzie currently plays for the Minnesota State women’s basketball team.
