The Eutingen, Germany product beat #18 Georgia’s Miguel Perez Pena in singles from the top court in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. Perez Pena is ranked No. 43 in the latest ITA Singles Rankings, as Mayer earned the highest-ranked singles win in program history.
Mayer earned a 2-1 record in singles play this week. He won his first singles match against UIC’s Gustavo Schwebel from the No. 4 spot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, as the Colonels dominated to win 6-1.
Mayer is the first player to win the first ASUN Men’s Tennis Player of the Week award twice to start the season since North Florida’s Jack Findel-Hawkins in 2016.
The Colonels host a doubleheader on Jan. 31 against Union College (Ky.) at 10:00 a.m. and Northern Kentucky at 2:00 p.m. at Greg Adams Tennis Center.
