Mechanic Shares Tips On Car Maintenance During Cold Weather

Brutally cold temperatures can take a toll on car batteries and tire pressure. A mechanic is sharing tips on what people can do to keep their vehicles healthy during the incoming frigid temperatures.

With chances of winter weather on the way, Tulsa Auto Doc operate Jeff McKelroy knows his calendar may start filling up.

“Lots of crashes,” he said. “Going to see a lot of cooling system issues, a lot of charging system and battery failures.”

It is no secret the snow and ice can create dangerous driving conditions. The temperatures alone can also create headaches.

“Things can seem fine now, buy you have a cold snap like we’re going to have, you may have a situation where the battery is going to be dead,” said McKelroy.

McKelroy says the secret to avoiding an even bigger inconvenience while traveling in the winter is to prepare ahead of time. This includes keeping an eye on tire pressure and tread.

“If the tire tread is low, that affects grip,” said McKelroy. “You’re not able to get all of the water out of the way.”

He says routine car maintenance could pay off in the times the weather gets dangerous.

“There are lots of places around town, including us, that are more than happy to check your charging system, make sure the alternator is working correctly, make sure your battery terminals are free of corrosion and clean,” he said.

If you are planning to travel during this stretch of brutally cold weather, mechanics say it’s a good idea to keep a jump pack on your car. You should also carry a first aid kit, blankets and water in case you get stranded.
