Meera Deosthale: I enjoy being the unconventional television bahu

Known for her roles in Udann and Vidya, Meera Deosthale continues her commitment to socially relevant narratives. In her latest show, Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai, she will portray Nandini, a character questioning the age-old practice of dowry. Reflecting on her roles, Meera shares, “I feel fortunate to be part of shows that convey meaningful messages. After Vidya, which emphasised the importance of education, and Gud Se Meetha Ishq, which promoted acceptance of the differently-abled, Nandini challenges age-old societal norms. There is no kitchen politics; ye ek sasur-aur-bahu ki kahaani hai. Yahaan par khaane mein namak ya bahu ko kaise bete ki zindagi se nikaalu, plotting karke kapde jala doon, woh sab nahi hai. Isme saas-bahu wala drama nahi hai.”
When it comes to TV shows, it’s almost inevitable for a protagonist to transition into a bahu. However, an actress’s choices play a pivotal role in determining the category to which she belongs. Meera says, “I prefer taking up substantial roles, avoiding the monotony of doing the same thing daily on set. I enjoy being the unconventional television bahu. I am not drawn to full-glam looks or being heavily dressed. I believe roles like the docile bahu require a certain delicateness and grace to be executed well. I am not averse to playing such characters, par kabhi mila nahi toh main kya karu (laughs!). I aspire to explore a variety of roles, as long as they align with my artistic inclinations.”

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on location: Ruhi & Armaan impress everyone with their chemistry

Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Bhi will feature Zaan Khan, who was last seen in Maitree and Vanshaj, as the male lead opposite Meera. In a chat with us, while talking about his love for the small screen, Zaan told us, “I love working in television because it keeps me occupied. Mera ghar chalta hai usse. It’s essential for someone like me who comes from a middle-class background to have a stable income and try for films on the side. TV aapko woh sab kuchh de deta hai jo shaayad paanch films na de paayein. Also, it is the best medium to learn, grow, and shine.”
