Meet the Journal Star girls tennis player of the year and all-area team for 2023

Richwoods junior Julia Wojtowicz makes a return during a Sept. 29, 2022 match against Bloomington High School on the Richwoods tennis courts.

PEORIA — Julia Wojtowicz and Shikha Agarwal dominated the high school girls tennis landscape this season.

When they played a head-to-head match on Sept. 30, it was essentially a championship match for the Peoria area. Richwoods senior Wojtowicz won that tense duel over Dunlap’s Agarwal, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6).

Wojtowicz ends her prep career as 2023 Journal Star Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

Agarwal, the splendid Dunlap senior, finishes up with IHSA Class 1A second-team all-state honors and led the Eagles to a third-place finish, the highest in the history of the school’s girls tennis program.

“It’s still so surreal to be part of this,” Dunlap coach Pat Gornik said days later. “I went back and looked through all the records. This is only the third time we’ve had a boys or girls team since 1991 win a quarterfinal match at state.

“It really puts it into perspective. Shikha gets to 100 career wins, we finish third at state. We went in not expecting anything but to play each match as it comes. We came out with an historic performance.

“We all signed the trophy. I have a silver sharpie we use. Their names are on the back of it for as long as we have that state trophy. Really, that’s a powerful thing.”

The Dunlap High School girls tennis players and coaching staff celebrate with the third-place trophy after the school secured its highest-ever finish in the Class 1A IHSA State Finals tennis tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023 at Buffalo Grove.

So is the 2023 Journal Star all-area girls tennis team:

They were dropped into a first-round bracket matchup against No. 1 seeds Maia and Estela Loureiro of Orland Park Sandburg, who went on to win the state title.
