Pulling off the perfect trip takes a lot of work, from figuring out what to pack (and what to pack everything in) to deciding how to get to your destination (and how to get around once you’re there) to picking the perfect place to stay. With seemingly endless options to choose from, it’s hard to know which ones will lead to your best possible family vacation.

how we tested travel awards

When it came to evaluating travel gear and services, we combined Lab tests run by our product experts with consumer tests in real-world settings. Our pros used specialized equipment to measure aspects like performance and durability, while having travel testers weigh in on things like comfort, ease of use, efficacy, appearance and more. Our reviewers also have the option to elaborate on anything specific they liked and disliked.

We also tested the transportation and experiences by having GH staffers and other travel professionals visit cities, hotels, resorts, attractions and other destinations. Through standardized surveys, testers shared in-depth feedback on amenities, family friendliness, food, service, safety, inclusivity, sustainability and other factors.

TESTER NOTES: Travel testers unanimously gave it perfect scores for ease of packing, comfort, style and overall satisfaction. One described it as “sturdy, sleek and lightweight” and added, “The hard-shell carry-on was surprisingly more lightweight than some soft-sided carry-ons I’ve used.” It wasn’t damaged after being repeatedly dropped in our Textiles Lab’s durability tests, and users noted that it held up well to real-life use.

It’s made of polycarbonate, a durable yet lightweight hardside material, and has a zipper that lets it expand. Not to mention the fact that this suitcase is an excellent value, especially considering its size.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewers used it for seven- to 10-day trips and said it held their entire loads with room to spare. As one put it, “It can fit everything I could possibly need — and more!” Testers also noted that their belongings seemed well-protected in the case, which proved scratch-resistant in our Lab tests. Users unanimously said they liked it better than other travel cribs they’d tried; plus, they loved its appearance and described it as “chic.”

Genius Camping Essentials

Ground-Breaking Campsite

Approach Rooftop Tent
Thule Approach Rooftop Tent

Muddy, uneven ground is no longer a camping setback thanks to this rooftop tent from Thule. Setup is simple: Just attach it to your roof rack with secure mounting brackets, then unfold it. It features large windows for ventilation, a removable rain cover and space for up to three people. Even better, the bottom layer features a built-in foam mattress.

TESTER NOTES: Avid campers found it easy to open and close, noting that the design felt durable. One tester described his experience by saying, “This rooftop tent is one of the best my family has ever tried. It’s built with quality materials and is sturdy and attractive.” Another benefit mentioned: “It gets your family off the ground and elevates you so you have a terrific view.”

Big Light-Blocking Tent

8-Person Dark Room Skydome Camping Tent
Coleman 8-Person Dark Room Skydome Camping Tent

This jumbo camping tent from Coleman features a roomy interior for up to eight people plus extra headroom to let them move about with ease. Its dark material blocks sunlight to help it stay darker and cooler inside. Other perks include a strong frame to help it withstand high winds, mesh storage pockets and a design to keep water out of both the floors and the sides.

TESTER NOTES: Our camping testers were amazed by how effectively it kept their tent cooler and darker even in full sun, recommending it for “those that do not like light pouring into their tents in the morning.” They also loved its ease of setup and its interior, saying, “This tent has very good headroom and we were able to stand in the center of it without crouching over.”

Handy Hose

2.0-Gallon Water Tank
WaterPORT 2.0-Gallon Water Tank

When there’s no sink or shower in sight, you can wash off sandy feet, dirty equipment and more with WaterPorts on-the-go tank. It holds up to two gallons of pressurized water and has a nozzle that lets you choose from five spray patterns. Other features include an eight-inch hose and a carrying handle so you can easily move the tank around.

TESTER NOTES: Our pros were impressed by its sturdy plastic design, which didn’t dent or scratch despite a few drops. Testers found it useful on car camping trips, with one noting, “I liked being able to wash my hands and my dog’s paws off.” They also found the water pressure strong, and one added, “It dispenses water evenly and not too much at once, and the two gallons lasts longer than you would think.”

Ultimate Power Supply

RIVER 2
EcoFlow RIVER 2

Plug in lamps, laptops, cameras and more with this portable power station from EcoFlow. It boasts a claimed charging time of just one hour and can even be recharged on the go via solar panels, USB-C, in-car charging or AC outlets. A convenient carrying handle makes it easy to transport, and a variety of ports and plugs let everyone charge their devices.

LAB RESULTS: This was a great source of backup power, and our engineers were able to charge multiple devices simultaneously in Lab tests. Testers appreciated how quickly it charged their devices and how it had multiple plug options. One tester used it to inflate an air mattress in a tent and noted, “It has nice portability for picnics and small outings and is easy to store.”

DEPENDABLE AIRLINE

Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines

Families can count on Alaska Airlines, the fifth largest carrier in the U.S., to get their vacations off to a smooth start. In July, the airline canceled less than half of one percent of its more than 35,000 flights at U.S. airports, giving it the best performance of all domestic carriers, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. (The average cancellation rate was 2.4%.) The airline also guarantees that children 13 and under will be seated next to at least one accompanying adult on their reservation, even with its “saver” fares.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer and her family flew Alaska Airlines from New York City to Seattle. “I was surprised by the variety of routes on Alaska Airlines,” she said. “There are also flights from the East Coast to San Diego and San Francisco, for instance. You could even get to Hawaii by having a layover in a West Coast city.” Our tester described her experience in economy cabin as “a little more elevated” than on other airlines she’d flown. She was also impressed with the kids’ food options.

ECONOMY CABIN INNOVATION

Air New Zealand's Skycouch
Air New Zealand’s Skycouch

Flying business class on lie-flat seats would be a dream come true, but it’s not in the budget for many families. Enter Air New Zealand’s Skycouch, which turns a row of three seats into a lie-flat experience. Once you reach cruising altitude, you push a few buttons in your row to adjust the footrest to an angled position and extend the seat cushion to make it a flat surface that’s about 5 feet long. Flight attendants provide you with linens and pillows to make your “bed.” You’ll still be able to be buckled in even when lying down. The carrier is in talks with other airlines — including in the U.S. — about licensing the patented product.

TESTER NOTES: On flights we searched in October 2023 for travel in March 2024, booking a Skycouch row to be shared by one adult and one child added about $500 each way to the fare — thousands less than the cost of bumping up to business class. Families we spoke to noted that a Skycouch row was comfortable for one adult and a smaller child, and they got as much sleep during their night in the sky as they usually did at home.

Electrified SUV

CX-90 PHEV
Mazda CX-90 PHEV

Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid with standard all-wheel drive and three rows of seating is perfect for family road trips. For those not quite ready to go fully electric, this SUV offers a good middle ground with up to 26 miles of electric driving range. It’s offered standard for eight passengers (the back is best suited for kids only), though you can opt for second-row captain chairs if that’s a better fit for your family’s needs.

TESTER NOTES: One engineer who test-drove the vehicle with her family of five said it was the perfect balance between a luxurious driving experience and nimble handling. She noted that the cabin felt upscale and the infotainment system interface was intuitive.

Overnight Train Adventure

Auto Train
Amtrak Auto Train

Head up and down the East Coast on this unique overnight journey from Amtrak. The front of train is filled with passengers — who can choose between coach seats, roomettes and bedrooms — while the back is loaded with their cars. You can travel back and forth between the Washington, DC, area and the Orlando, FL, area, saving you the hassle of flying or driving.

TESTER NOTES: Beyond the convenience, the train ride itself was a hit with our testers. Kids loved the novelty of sleeping on the train, while parents loved that they didn’t have to worry about lost baggage or luggage weight limits. “We slept well and woke up refreshed for a full day as we were arriving,” a tester told us.

Do-It-All Guide

Maps
Google Maps

Navigate new cities and uncover hidden gems using this trusted app. With directions, traffic updates, business hours and restaurant reservations all at your fingertips, Google Maps makes it easier than ever to organize a travel itinerary. You can even get started before your trip begins by using the Explore tab to find and save places you want to visit, then access that list once you arrive.

TESTER NOTES: Our travel pros have relied on Google Maps for years, with one noting, “I wouldn’t consider visiting a new city without the app by my side.” GH engineers describe it as one of the most robust, fundamental tools for modern-day travel, and our testers rave about how straightforward and accessible it is.

FLEXIBLE LOYALTY PROGRAM

One Key

In July, individual loyalty programs from Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo merged into a single powerhouse unit — One Key. Travelers can earn and redeem rewards across all three brands, encompassing flights, vacation rentals, hotels and activities. Combining the programs may also help travelers reach a higher membership tier more quickly, qualifying them for perks such as hotel upgrades. To keep your rewards from expiring, you have to earn or redeem them at least once every 18 months.

TESTER NOTES: “I love that One Key’s rewards are listed as dollar value you can using toward any booking,” said our reviewer, who used her rewards to cover part of a hotel stay. “It’s nice not having to wait to reach a certain number of points to redeem an award.”

Fast & Fresh Prepared Meals

Farmer's Fridge
Farmer’s Fridge

Airport food can still be fresh and delicious thanks to Farmer’s Fridge vending machines. Available in over 20 U.S. airports, this smart machine is filled with nutritious options like salads, grain bowls, yogurt parfaits and snacks, and they come in recyclable jars. You can even access the menu and reserve your food in advance by using the brand’s app.

TESTER NOTES: GH’s nutrition director loves the concept and has used the vending machine many times while passing through airports. Our travel testers were impressed with the portion size, quality and freshness of their meals. “Everything was delicious,” raved one.

RV RENTALS SIMPLIFIED

RVshare

With more than 100,000 RV and motorhome listings, RVshare is a one-stop-shop for rentals and trip inspo. You just plug in where you’re going, your dates and, if appropriate, your towing vehicle. Seconds later, you’re presented with a list of options that includes photos and key details about the size and amenities. Last year, more than half of renters used the platform’s “destination delivery” feature, which gets the RV set up in your preferred location so you get the fun experience of RV camping without actually having to drive one. Around-the-clock customer assistance and roadside service provide peace of mind.

TESTER NOTES: “The app was incredibly easy and intuitive to use,” said our tester, who booked an RV for his family of five on Fourth of July weekend. “I particularly liked the Trips button on the bottom of the app’s homepage. It made getting to all the relevant trip details incredibly easy — nothing was buried under different menus.”

MONEY-SAVING ATTRACTION PASS

CityPass

Available in 15 North American destinations, CityPass sells bundled attraction passes that can save you more than 40%. Though options vary by destination, you can typically choose passes that include one-time admission to three or five family-friendly attractions for a period of seven or nine days. At some attractions, there’s a “skip-the-line” entrance for CityPass customers. Knowing that travel plans change, CityPass offers a full refund if you can no longer use tickets you purchased within the past year.

TESTER NOTES: “The app clearly highlights which attractions still require advance reservations, and that was so helpful for my planning,” said a reviewer, who estimates that she saved $55 per adult using Seattle CityPass compared with paying for five attractions individually. “I also liked having all the tickets and pertinent information, like the operating hours, in one app rather than having to organize everything myself.”

Impressive AI Language Tutor

Max
Duolingo Max

Learn a new language before International travel with Duolingo’s app subscription. It even has AI-generated role-play exercises in French and Spanish that mimic real-world conversations. Much like a human tutor, its AI can also explain why a confusing answer is right or wrong so you’ll never be left second-guessing yourself.

TESTER NOTES: Our tech experts and consumers testers found getting started super-easy. Testers described using the app as “very entertaining and educational at the same time,” noting that it felt like a game. One tester said, “It’s a huge motivation boost and makes it feel like a lot of fun.” They were also wowed by the AI chatbot: “I found it to be surprisingly good, and maybe the best feature of the app,” one told us.

On-Call Safety App

Safe

Arlo’s app and its accompanying device help travelers feel protected, especially when they’re alone. The button is small enough to carry in your hand, pocket or purse or on a key chain. Should you feel in danger or if an emergency arises, just one quick tap of the button will connect you with live security agents 24/7. A subscription also gives you access to features like emergency contact alerts, family check-ins and more.

TESTER NOTES: Fortunately our analysts and testers were never in a situation that required emergency help, but we tested the Arlo Safe button and app and were impressed by how quickly it connected us with live help. The app was easy to navigate, and the button was a breeze to set up via Bluetooth. “I felt safer navigating unfamiliar routes at night,” one tester shared.

Global Cell Phone Plan

Fi Wireless
Google Fi Wireless

Up to six family members can stay connected domestically and internationally on this cell phone plan from Google. Its Unlimited Plus plan offers unlimited data, calls and texts in North America on top of unlimited data and hotspot tethering in more than 200 global destinations. Travelers can stream music, browse the Web and look up directions while abroad without having to buy a new SIM card or deal with high roaming fees.

TESTER NOTES: It only took seconds to find a reliable network when our tech experts tried it in multiple countries, and it even managed to provide service in remote locations like islands, sand dunes and dense woods. The download and upload speeds were fast. “I liked that it worked immediately, and I didn’t have to do anything extra upon arrival to set it up properly,” one travel tester said.

Captivating Coastal Towns

THE OTHER OUTER BANKS

The Crystal Coast, North Carolina
The Crystal Coast, North Carolina

Also called the Southern Outer Banks, the 85 miles of scenic shoreline on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast feel like a giant hidden gem. Sure, you’ve heard of Nags Head (thanks, Netflix) but the 11 Crystal Coast communities about three to four hours southwest of that should be on your radar too. It’s easy to drive from one to the next, so your crew could be climbing the lighthouse in Harkers Island in the morning, exploring the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores in the afternoon and heading to the buzzy Amos Mosquito’s in Atlantic Beach for dinner. With happy yet tired kids, retreat to your beach rental (there are many!) or hotel before you get up and do it all again tomorrow.

TESTER NOTES: “Each town we explored had its own character, and Beaufort was my favorite,” said our reviewer. The city, established in 1713, includes a fantastic downtown for shopping and dining, a maritime museum and a picturesque creek where you can kayak. Our tester stayed at the Beaufort Hotel, calling it “an impressive waterfront boutique hotel with large bedrooms that struck the right balance between comfort and style.”

QUIET SPOT IN MEXICO

Loreto Baja California Sur, Mexico
Loreto Baja California Sur, Mexico

The first Spanish colonial city on the Baja peninsula in northwestern Mexico, Loreto dazzles families with its unspoiled beaches, stunning landscapes and downtown cobblestone streets. Fortunately, a lot of vacationers haven’t caught wind of Loreto’s charms yet, so it doesn’t feel touristy and still offers many family-owned shops, restaurants and hotels. Given all the opportunities for adventure — including snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding and scuba diving in National Loreto Bay and Marine Park — it’s best experienced with older kids. The airport, about 15 minutes from the town center, offers direct flights, including some from the East Coast.

TESTER NOTES: “We stayed at Hotel La Misión—the largest in town and probably the most modern of all the hotels,” said our reviewer. “Our room had a beautiful water view with a balcony, a perfect spot for watching the Loreto sunrises.” She added that while restaurants mainly concentrate on Mexican fare, you can also find Tex-Mex, Italian and Peruvian. “We had great meals there,” she added.

MILES OF SMILES

The Palm Beaches, Florida
The Palm Beaches, Florida

From Juniper Beach to Boca Raton, the 47 miles of sun-kissed shores in what are collectively known as The Palm Beaches have the reputation for being a playground for retirees and jet-setters. But the vibe is changing fast. More resorts are prioritizing families, and in some cases the average age of guests has decreased by decades. Beyond the impeccable beaches, family-focused attractions are sprinkled throughout the region — standouts include the sea turtle–focused Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach and the drive-through Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee.

TESTER NOTES: “This trip completely changed my perspective on the Palm Beaches,” said our reviewer, who visited with her spouse and their 2-year-old. “It’s a treat for parents, but also enjoyable for kids.” Her family split their stay between the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens and Eau Palm Beach Resort in Manalapan. “They were both exquisite, but very different,” she said. “PGA is best for families who like to golf, but it is also family-friendly, with an amazing kids’ club and spa. Eau Palm Beach is pure luxury on the water and kid-friendly too.”

A WHALE OF A TIME

Dana Point, CA
Dana Point, CA

It’s always whale-watching season in Dana Point, CA. About 35 miles south of Disneyland, this laid-back beach town boasts the highest concentration of whales and dolphins of any place in the world. Migrating gray whales swing by Dana Point from November through April, while blue whales come to visit from May through November. See them up close (and learn why Dana Point is a mecca for marine life) on one of the many whale-watching tours and at the educational Ocean Institute. The beaches are awesome too — Baby Beach in particular has gentle waves and nearby restrooms.

TESTER NOTES: Fly into Orange County rather than L.A. if possible, suggests our tester. “Dana Point was just an easy 30-minute drive from the airport, while L.A. traffic would have been a nightmare,” she noted. The beautiful Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa, where our reviewer stayed, is near a trolley stop and just a 15-minute walk to the harbor. “I loved that the hotel is almost embedded within Lantern Bay Park, which has a playground and morning yoga,” she said. “It made the resort feel like it was part of the community.”

Adventure for All

Destin-Fort Walton Beach, FL
Destin-Fort Walton Beach, FL

Capitalize on the calm, crystal-clear Gulf Coast waters off Destin-Fort Walton Beach to take little ones snorkeling, charter fishing or even surfing for the first time. The destination’s new Little Adventures program simplifies finding a family-friendly outfitter. Search options on its website, sorting by your child’s age, price point and how much time you have for the activity; you’ll get, say, four tailored suggestions instead of 40 general ones. From the site, you can also chat online with a mom who can dispense advice about the best beaches (24 miles of them!), restaurants and places to stay from resorts to vacation rentals. The easy-to-navigate Destin-Fort Walton airport offers direct flights from more than two dozen cities including Chicago, Dallas and Las Vegas so you’ll have less time in the air and more on the sand.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer raved about the activities through the Little Adventures program. “My third grader caught a 31-inch-long fish on our fishing trip with Lions Tale Adventures,” she said. “The captain wouldn’t let him give up — and my son was so excited and proud.“

Best Beach Resorts

THE NEW KID ON THE BEACH

JW Marriott Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa, Clearwater Beach, Florida
JW Marriott Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa, Clearwater Beach, Florida

Thank you for getting it, JW Marriott Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa. Just opened in May, the chic resort has sculpted a kids’ play area on its stretch of white-sand beach that’s exclusive to resort guests. Mini vacationers can go to town with the loaner sand toys (and even games like Jenga) while you comfortably watch from your nearby lounger. One- to three-bedroom “residences” give you separate sleeping quarters from the kids’ as well as a mini fridge, a microwave and a pantry to boot. A swimming pool is on the rooftop (whoa!), and you can drop off 5- to 12-year-olds at Hideaway Hangout for an array of activities including a beach-themed craft and yoga sesh.

TESTER NOTES: Service is spot-on throughout the resort — not surprising, since staff underwent several extra months of training after the building was ready. “This is by far the nicest, most helpful, friendliest staff we have ever had the pleasure of meeting,” said our reviewer.

ALL-INCLUSIVE, WITH A TWIST

Beaches Negril, Jamaica
Beaches Negril, Jamaica

You know what’s harder than traveling with a toddler? Traveling with a toddler who has special needs. Beaches Negril, an all-inclusive, family-focused resort on the famed Seven Mile Beach, has got you. Its kids’ club staff receives 40 additional hours of training, so there’s never a question about whether a child with autism or sensory differences can join the fun. Sensory-friendly toys and comfort aids are also available at the camp, and new brochures highlight the sensory levels of the resort’s Sesame Street programming, like the parade, puppet-making and tea parties that families can participate in together. Just-opened multi-bedroom villas, some with butler service, are icing on an already very delicious cake.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewers said everything went smoothly and noted, “We truly felt taken care of.” A parent noted, “The kids’ club staff were very patient and attentive to my 7-year-old daughter, who has autism. She enjoyed the activities, like a multilevel climbing structure, that were inside the club building as well as ones on the grounds. The staff also had a visual schedule of activities that my daughter appreciated.”

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES TO TRY

Club Med Cancún, Cancun Mexico
Club Med Cancún, Cancun Mexico

Even if your kids are seasoned vacationers, they’re going to have a lot of “firsts” at the all-inclusive Club Med Cancún. First spin on the trapeze, first time watching sea turtles lay eggs on the beach, first photo scavenger hunt — the list could go on and on, depending on how busy you want them to be. That’s the beauty of the place — your crew could hang at one of three private beachfronts splashing in the turquoise water or participate in activities from morning to night. And if the kids want to go, go, go but you’d rather take things slowly, the supervised clubs for babies through teens, broken down by age into several groups, provide an enthralling experience for them while you’re at the adult pool.

TESTER NOTES: “All-inclusives have never appealed to my husband and me because we value the culinary experience, but the food here was super fresh and plentiful and the drinks were fantastic,” said our reviewer. “Plus, our 8-year-old and 12-year-old could always find something they wanted to eat — and that’s a miracle!”

FAN FAVORITE

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya, Mexico
Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya, Mexico

Jumpin’ jellyfish! SpongeBob, PAW Patrol, and Dora the Explorer devotees will be in their element at the all-inclusive Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya. Your kids will talk about the themed rooms, water park and food, character meet-and-greets and, yes, the brand’s famous green slime, long after the suitcases have been unpacked. But as kid-focused as this resort is, parents aren’t an afterthought. A spa, a mimosa bar, a poke bowl station and suites with swim-up pools make you feel right at home too.

TESTER NOTES: “It exceeded our expectations on so many levels,” said a reviewer who visited with her 9- and 13-year-olds. “From the swim-up pool and lounge area just steps outside our room to the SpongeBob SquarePants refrigerator to the neon-colored slime dripping from the lampshade, the room was simply outstanding!” In fact, she noted that the decor of the restaurants “had subtle and tasteful nods to Nickelodeon, but wasn’t overdone or too kitschy.”

Picturesque Beach

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Rainforest, Golf & Beach Resort, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Rainforest, Golf & Beach Resort, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico

For a passport-free tropical getaway, the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Rainforest, Golf & Beach Resort delivers an unforgettable adventure. Sure, you’ll spend countless hours on the two miles of private beach — with golden sand, turquoise water and typically gentle waves along with umbrellas and loungers, how could you not? But the resort’s huge array of family-friendly activities, such as kite flying, salsa dancing, and even a chance to feed iguanas, is enticing. At the supervised feeding, families can give iguanas and turtles fresh fruit on skewers. To see more iguanas (and many other animals), book an excursion to the El Yunque National Rainforest — it’s just 10 minutes from the resort.

TESTER NOTES: “This was a fun, vibrant resort that had a great tropical feel!” said our tester. While she and her son enjoyed all the food they tried, they thought the Puerto-Rican barbecue buffet on weekends was particularly good. “If your family has leftovers from any meal, you can keep them in your fridge and reheat them in the microwave at the Roots To Go restaurant,” she said.

ALL-INCLUSIVE WONDERLAND

Hotel Xcaret México, Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Hotel Xcaret México, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

The Hotel Xcaret México doesn’t want you to be the all-inclusive vacationer who never leaves the property because you’re worried about getting your money’s worth. The brand operates a dozen “adventure parks” around the region that are included in the price, and they’ll even shuttle your crew to them. Not only do you get to see more of the locale that way but you can also have memorable experiences, like exploring cenotes (underground caves filled with water) and ziplining over treetops, that you couldn’t possibly have at a single resort. While the adventure parks do appeal more to families with older kids, the resort itself offers a drop-off kids’ club for ages 4 and up and thoughtful touches like kids’ loungers alongside the adult ones.

TESTER NOTES: Besides the activities, the service and the food were top-notch. If you hope to eat at Ha Restaurant, which specializes in contemporary Mexican fare, you need to make a reservation a few months in advance. “It was one of the nicest, most imaginatively delicious meals we have ever had,” our reviewer said.

EUROPEAN RESORT FOR KIDS

Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort & Hotel, Sagres, Portugal
Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort & Hotel, Sagres, Portugal

European families thought they were going to keep Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort & Hotel all to themselves, but the secret is out. On a continent where it’s hard to find a hotel room that sleeps more than two guests, there’s an entire beach resort in the trendy Algarve region catering to families with kids ages 13 and under. Its 155 villas each supply multiple bedrooms, a kitchen and — maybe most useful of all — a washer and dryer. Kids will have a fresh swimsuit in which to go pool-hopping (the place has five pools) and explore the beach hangout with hammocks, coconut beds and sand toys. Beyond the water fun, families can play 18 holes of mini golf or try petanque, a French game similar to bocce. Restaurants offer supervised toy-filled corners where little ones can hang while you’re finishing your cappuccino. The proverbial cherry on top: The entire resort is solar-powered!

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, who brought her daughter, suggests traveling light. “Bring as little baby/toddler gear as possible, because the resort has everything from bottle warmers to strollers,” she said. “Restaurants even keep high chairs at the tables so you don’t have to ask for one.”

COTTAGES BY THE LAKE

The Cove at Sylvan Beach, Sylvan Beach, NY
The Cove at Sylvan Beach, Sylvan Beach, NY

For your next lakefront getaway or even family reunion, you don’t have to choose between a vacation rental and a resort. Open from May to October, The Cove at Sylvan Beach consists of 70 adorable two- and three-bedroom cottages with kitchens, outdoor grills, living rooms and washer/dryers. There are also resort-like perks including a heated pool that’s lifeguarded, a playground, organized activities, and a grab-and-go marketplace offering sundries, ice cream and of course coffee. Each family receives its own pontoon boat to use on Oneida Lake, and you can rent gear such as water skis, kayaks and paddleboards on-site. As for the beach, it’s a short walk away. Pick up smoothie bowls (there’s a great shop on the way) and eat breakfast admiring the view.

TESTER NOTES: The property opened last year, and “everything still felt brand new,” said our reviewer, who noted that the three-bedroom cottages had bunks for kids. She added, “The setup of the property and the feel of the cottage give homey vibes with a vacation edge.”

THRILLS & CHILLS

Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas
Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas

You can practically feel the adrenaline pumping in the water park at Atlantis Paradise Island. Slides with vertical drops of up to 60 feet feel exhilarating, to put it mildly. Across the resort, on the five miles of white sand beach, calm turquoise water and powdery white sand relax vacationers. The juxtaposition helps explain why this mega-resort is so popular, especially with families of older kids and multigenerational groups—you set your own pace. A pirate-themed water park for young kids unleashes mini thrills, while the open-air marine habitat with more than 65,000 aquatic animals representing 250 species entertains all ages in a subtler way. While not high-intensity, restaurant concepts from three Michelin-star-rated chefs do have a way of exciting grown-ups. Of the five hotels on the property, the Royal Towers offers the most recently updated rooms, and it is in a central location.

TESTER NOTES: Crush, a club with separate nighttime hours for tweens and teens, is the ultimate hangout spot, thanks to a DJ and a floor-to-ceiling gaming tree. “My 12-year-old twins loved it,” said our reviewer. “While they were having fun, my husband and I went to the casino and bars.”

TROPICAL OASIS

Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa, St. Lucia
Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa, St. Lucia

Just five minutes from the airport (hooray!), the all-inclusive Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa immediately revitalizes jet-lagged families. Kids will want to change into their swimsuits and play in the water park, the largest on the island. It’s not a bad idea, considering the fact that you can all float down the lazy river and enjoy some bites and drinks on loungers by the park. It’s also 100% worth taking advantage of the kids’ club. In groups broken down into three age ranges — 3 and under, 4 to 7, and 8 to 12 — the club offers fun activities including a pirate ship play space and a mini rock wall. The former coconut plantation spread over 85 acres, with beautiful flowers and more than 1,000 palm trees, also contains a sanctuary for rescued animals that families can visit.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer was impressed with the food selection and quality. A casual pick right on the water, The Jerk Treehouse, “had fabulous food,” she said, adding, “Silk was our favorite fine-dining restaurant. I had the best wonton soup of my life there.”

SHORE BET

Shore House at The Del, Coronado, California
Shore House at The Del, Coronado, California

The historic Hotel del Coronado recently opened a contemporary spinoff that’s ideal for families who need multiple bedrooms and extra hangout space. A maven for multi-gen groups, villas in The Shore House at the Del can sleep up to 11, have wrap-around balconies with ocean views and a kitchen with high-end appliances, including a Nespresso machine. The location can’t be beat, either. Walk from your room for just a few minutes, and your crew could be on one of the best beaches in San Diego, in the heated outdoor pool and hot tub that’s exclusive for Shore House guests, or at one of the downtown’s trendy shops or restaurants.

TESTER NOTES: “Since all the Hotel del Coronado’s amenities, including its thoughtful Ocean Explorers Kids’ Program, are also available to families staying at Shore House, we felt like we had the best of both worlds,” said our tester, who visited with three generations.

SECLUDED VACATION SPOT

Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort, Cancun, Mexico
Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort, Cancun, Mexico

Located on the Mayan coastline, Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort is a weary parents’ paradise. You’re greeted with welcome drinks, an offer to store any bulky kid gear you needed for the plane ride and a lineup of activities included in the price. The best one may be the Kids’ Club for ages 4 to 12. With no up-charge, you can take the chance that your kids will be so enamored with all the activities and friendly staff that you can sit with a book by the adults-only pool or indulge in a spa treatment from its neighboring sister property, Waldorf Astoria Cancun. And did we mention the taqueria with tamarind margaritas?

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, who brought her spouse and 5-year-old, is already planning another vacation there. “Our son loved it so much that he cried when we left,” she said, noting that her family felt “very safe on the property.”

CAPE COD TREASURE

Wequassett Resort and Golf Club, Harwich, Massachusetts
Wequassett Resort and Golf Club, Harwich, Massachusetts

If lawn games and lobster rolls are what your family’s vacation dreams are made of, look no further than Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. The beloved Cape Cod mainstay since 1925 embraces quintessential fun. The vibe is chill—summer afternoons are spent on the resort’s small private beach or the Cape Cod National Seashore (guests can take a boat shuttle there from the resort’s dock). At night, families gather by the firepits for s’mores-roasting and listen to live music. You can stick together the whole time or enroll your 4 to 12-year-old in the children’s club where they’ll explore the pirate ship playground, go on a scavenger or take a boat ride.

TESTER NOTES: Staff go out of their way to surprise and delight. “The kids’ club sent my 7-year-old a small gift for being brave and kind,” said our reviewer. “And on a seal-watching boat ride that left from the resort, the captain showed her how to steer the boat.”

HAWAIIAN PERFECTION

Four Seasons Resort Hualālai, Kailua-Kona, Island of Hawaii
Four Seasons Resort Hualālai, Kailua-Kona, Island of Hawaii

Aloha to swaying palm trees, stunning beaches with otherworldly landscapes and shave ice: Four Seasons Resort Hualālai on the island of Hawaiʻi (aka “The Big Island”) fulfills what’s on your family’s vacation wishlist and then some. The Four Seasons vibrant cultural center—staffed by “aunties” who have a way with kids—immerses families in Native Hawaiian traditions. Sure, there’s hula and lei-making, but storytelling, ukulele lessons, quilting, and more round out the robust (and complementary) daily lineup. That’s in addition to the free Kids for All Seasons club for 5- to 12-year-olds and the marine activity center focusing on sustainability and educational programming.

TESTER NOTES: “The warmth and genuine kindness we felt at the cultural center was unlike anything we’d ever experienced,” said our reviewer, who visited with her 13-year-old. She was also impressed by the stylish rooms that “exuded Hawaiian vibes with a modern and chic twist.”

Park-Hopper’s Pick

The Seabird Resort, Oceanside, CA
The Seabird Resort, Oceanside, CA

If you loathe the idea of switching hotels as you experience So Cal’s epic attractions (Legoland! Disneyland! The San Diego Zoo!), flock to The Seabird Resort. About halfway between Anaheim and San Diego and just a few miles from Legoland California, this newish beachfront property gives you a lot of bang for your buck and a stylish central location to boot. Recharge after visiting the theme parks with relaxing beach and pool time. While your mini vacationers are at the kids’ club, consider booking yourself a foot treatment at Sunny’s Spa & Beauty Lounge; your soul — er, soles — will thank you.

TESTER NOTES: Check the daily resort schedule. “While we were there, curated activities for kids were taking place in the ‘library’ and a family-friendly movie was shown on the rooftop,” said our reviewer, who also praised the well-designed room with multiple charging stations.

Must-See Cities

ECO FAMILY ESCAPE

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The city with the best weather in all of Canada wants to keep it that way. Victoria’s carbon-neutral whale-watching tours, abundant water bottle refill stations, expanded green spaces, zero-waste shops and more help prevent climate change and give peace of mind to families. From a cultural perspective, opportunities for kids to learn about the British and First Nations influence come naturally, from afternoon tea to seeing colorful totem poles in Beacon Hill Park. The carbon neutral-certified Parkside Hotel and Spa — with its spacious suite-only rooms with kitchens and washer/dryers — provides a fantastic home base for any family’s adventures.

TESTER NOTES: “The whole trip was fabulous,” said our tester. “The Butchart Gardens are some of the most spectacular I’ve ever seen, including in Europe. They’re stroller- and pet-friendly and wheelchair-accessible. Children especially loved the carousel!” She added that the overall vibe of Victoria was “upbeat, friendly, comfortable and safe.”

GOOD TIMES FOR ALL

New Orleans
New Orleans

Heads up, New Orleans takes the (king) cake for being way more family-friendly than might be expected, especially outside of Mardi Gras week. A perfect day with tiny tourists starts in City Park at the famed beignet purveyor Cafe du Monde. Stroll over to the Louisiana Children’s Museum and explore the art museum’s free outdoor sculpture garden before riding a trolley to the French Quarter in time for a jazz performance at Preservation Hall, which welcomes the under-21 crowd. The Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium, which just received a massive makeover, and artsy neighborhoods like Algiers Point will add razzle-dazzle to your itinerary.

TESTER NOTES: While nice hotel chains abound, boutique options in repurposed historic buildings are a cool alternative. “My teen loved the vibe and brick walls at One11, which used to be a sugar-refining company,” said a tester. The newish HI New Orleans Hostel, once a social club, is a budget-friendly, highly rated option for families with older kids.

SOUTHERN GEM

Greenville, SC
Greenville, SC

One of those rare places that appeal to a variety of ages and interests, Greenville warmly welcomes everyone. Outdoorsy type? A 32-acre urban park with a suspension bridge that curves around a waterfall is epic. Car aficionado? Check out the free BMW Zentrum Museum. Have a kid who’s into science? Roper Mountain wows with its up-close reptile encounters, dino trails and “starry night” shows. The Residence Inn Downtown Greenville, a few blocks away from more than 200 locally owned eateries and shops, offers a complementary hearty breakfast, an outdoor pool and excellent service at a price that makes it a value. In fact, in 2022 the average cost of a hotel room in Greenville was $170.

TESTER NOTES: “The vibe in Greenville was energetic,” said our tester, who visited with her 6-year-old. “There was a liveliness about the place. I saw families, couples and groups of friends and the biggest thing I noticed was the feeling in the air. People were happy.”

EXCEPTIONAL VALUE

Madison, WI
Madison, WI

Your vacation budget will stretch far in Madison, a lakefront state capital that’s packed with low-cost, high-quality attractions. Families can explore the zoo, the art museum, the botanical gardens and the nature center for free. At Lake Windgra (one of the city’s five lakes), fun gear—such as a paddleboat shaped like a yellow rubber duck and a mega-SUP that fits six people—is inexpensive to rent. A stroller-friendly downtown and playgrounds galore make sightseeing extra fun. Rooms in the newish Hyatt Place and the lakefront Edgewater Hotel cater to families, and an easy-to-navigate airport accepts direct flights from 15 destinations including New York City, Atlanta, Dallas and Denver.

TESTER NOTES: The Madison Children’s Museum is a must-see for those with young kids. “It created many of its imaginative exhibits, including its climbing structure, out of recycled materials,” said one mom.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS

Santa Fe, NM
Santa Fe, NM

Small and walkable, Santa Fe makes kids feel welcome at its many cultural attractions. From scavenger hunts for dolls and dioramas at the Museum of International Folk Art to a life-size tipi and discovery room at the Museum of Indian Art and Culture, tiny travelers will have plenty to prevent them from getting antsy. If the grandparents are along for the trip (Santa Fe is a hot retirement spot), they’ll love sharing in these experiences. Unless you live in the region, plan to fly into the airport in Albuquerque, which is roughly an hour away.

TESTER NOTES: “Santa Fe is a welcoming place with an art-loving vibe that somehow avoids feeling pretentious,” said our reviewer. “Almost all the buildings downtown are pueblo, so it has a historic, cohesive feel too.” Our reviewer stayed at Hotel Santa Fe, downtown. “It’s 100% Native-owned and -operated,” she noted. “While it’s clearly a bit older, it’s still clean and comfortable, and it has a door between the bedroom and the sitting area, which is nice if little ones are sleeping.”

DESERT OASIS

Tucson

The second-largest city in Arizona, Tucson stands out as much for its culture as for its cacti — and everything is done in a kid-friendly way. For instance, the city’s zoo and aquarium are part of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, where there’s also an art gallery as well as natural history exhibits. The exceptional Degrazia Gallery in the Sun captivates children with its variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits focusing on Southwestern art. The downtown has been revitalized, the scenery is dreamy and family-friendly places to stay, including the JW Marriott Tucson Star Pass Resort & Spa, abound. With its glorious temperatures in March and April, put Tucson on the radar for spring break.

TESTER NOTES: Highlights included hiking and visiting art museums and galleries. “The food was amazing and so was the scenery,” said our tester. “There is so much to do for all age groups.” From the counter-service Seis Kitchen to bistro Tito & Pep, the city’s culinary scene is phenomenal. “Our final meal at 5 Points Market & Restaurant was another winner,” she said. “Everything was farm-to-table, and the baked goods were made in-house.”

MONUMENTALLY FUN

Rapid City, SD
Rapid City, SD

You want to take the kids to see Mount Rushmore, but what else is nearby that could make it a full-fledged vacation? Enter Rapid City, about 30 minutes north. Free attractions like Dinosaur Park, Storybook Island and the Museum of Geology (with a kids’ zone) and the nearby Crazy Horse Memorial and Badlands National Park make Rapid City a smart home base for a South Dakota adventure. The WaTiki Indoor Waterpark Resort, connected with five hotels including the roomy Residence Inn by Marriott, is hands-down the most kid-friendly place to stay in Rapid City.

TESTER NOTES: Our testers noted that the vibe was geared toward families with young kids. They especially liked how it catered to a wide range of interests, from history and museums to animals to water parks and more. Prioritize visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial, especially in the morning when it’s less crowded. “The memorial itself is much larger than you’d expect,” said our tester. “The story behind it, as well as the Indian Museum of North America located on the nearby grounds, is truly remarkable.”

THREE VACATIONS IN ONE

Traverse City, MI
Traverse City, MI

With a thriving downtown, family-friendly wineries and popular beach spots, small but mighty Traverse City (population about 15,500) is the travel equivalent of a triple threat. Your crew could be hunting for speckled Petoskey stones at the beach in the morning, spend an afternoon in the “secret garden” at the family-friendly Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery and then catch a show downtown at night. After a jam-packed day, the kids will go right to sleep at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa — though expect them to want to hit the property’s four pools (two are indoors) the next morning.

TESTER NOTES: Traverse City appeals to parents as much as it does to kids.“If you’re looking for a family getaway on which you can be in touch with nature while still being in a town that has a lot of great food, wine and beer options, Traverse City is the spot,” said our tester.

Unique Urban Stays

GROOVY STAY

The Garland, North Hollywood, CA
The Garland, North Hollywood, CA

If you’re planning to take the kids to Universal Studios Hollywood, The Garland comes out on top for being a playful and practical place to stay. A swanky trolley will whisk you to the park and back to the hotel, where you’ll really be glad you booked a family suite with a separate walled-off kids’ nook with bunk beds. If you still have the energy (though it won’t take much), go to the pool for the “dive-in” classic movies or to the outdoor bar for artisanal cocktails. While splashes of orange throughout the resort add to its retro feel, the property is actually becoming more green thanks to drought-resistant landscaping and a solar-power system that’s in the works.

TESTER NOTES: “We ate breakfast at The Front Yard every day before hopping on the trolley,” said our reviewer, who visited with her spouse and 7-year-old. “It was so cute seeing all the little Marios and Princess Peaches at the tables. The food was delicious, and my daughter got a coloring sheet.”

IDEAL LOCATION IN NEW YORK CITY

Thompson Central Park New York, New York City
Thompson Central Park New York, New York City

While the 400-thread count sheets, loaner Bugaboo strollers and Peloton bikes in the fitness center impress, the location of Thompson Central Park New York is most remarkable. Opt for keyless mobile check-in to one of the hotel’s recently renovated 587 rooms and suites (king suites are great for families) to bypass the front desk and get a head start on sightseeing. In just five minutes you can walk to the south entrance of Central Park or be at a subway stop that will whisk your crew uptown or downtown. In the unlikely event that you come back to the hotel hungry, restaurants — including Parker’s, which has jazz music, and the more family-friendly Burger Joint — have you covered.

TESTER NOTES: “The hotel was in the perfect location for us,” said our reviewer, who visited with her family. “We walked to the Central Park Zoo and spent a lot of time in the Columbus Circle area, including at Camp at Time Warner Center and Magnolia Bakery. There was even a grocery store next to the hotel’s back entrance, which proved very convenient for us.”

MOST PET-FRIENDLY BRAND

Staypineapple, multiple locations
Staypineapple, multiple locations

Fur babies have it made at Staypineapple, a hotel chain with locations in seven major U.S. cities. No matter which location you visit, the perks for your pooch are the same — they get a dog bed to use during the stay, a tin of treats and a collapsible water bowl to take home. While most hotels don’t allow you to keep a pet inside the room while you’re out (even if you’re just making a quick run to Starbucks), Staypineapple gives pet parents a doggie door hanger that says “My Owner Is Out Exploring’ to indicate that it’s not a good time for a visit from housekeeping. Genius, right? Human treats are offered too, with a free spread of pineapple-shaped cookies, local coffee and infused water every afternoon.

TESTER NOTES: Reviewers tried the locations in New York City, San Diego and Seattle. “We enjoyed the staff’s enthusiasm for dogs and the sheer number of dogs we saw around the hotel and on our floor specifically,” said our reviewer who brought her pooch to Staypineapple Hotel Z in San Diego. “We also loved the location of the hotel.”

RESORT IN ROME

Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Rome, Italy
Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Rome, Italy

Perched on 15 acres of parkland above the iconic city, the The Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel allows families to intersperse sightseeing with resort fun. Take the short hotel shuttle ride into Rome to explore the Coliseum and other historic sites and museums. Then, in the heat of the afternoon, retreat to the hotel’s four swimming pools, including one just for young kids and another under a glass dome. A complimentary kids’ club for 4- to 12-year-olds operates in the summer months so you can take advantage of the on-site spa or meander around the property to see some of more than 1,000 pieces of art. Connecting rooms for families can accommodate two adults and three children, and you’ll have plenty of options for breakfast and other meals.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, who visited with his spouse and two young children, thought it would be a wonderful place to stay on a family’s first trip to Europe. “The view is unbelievable, and the pools are amazing,” he said. “We also found the customer service to be exceptional.”

WATER FUN IN THE DESERT

JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Phoenix, Arizona
JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Phoenix, Arizona

The JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa recently received an $80 million glow-up, and it’s impressive. Kids will care most about the AquaRidge WaterPark, which has an array of new slides, a splash pad, a food truck area and a reimagined lazy river. Private firepits now sit outside some first-level rooms. while many rooms on upper floors got balcony redos to let guests better soak in the spectacular views of desert vistas and waterways. An on-property garden supplies produce for the restaurants, including Tía Carmen, a concept from a popular Top Chef contestant. Another fresh feature: 17 lighted pickleball courts and certified instructors to teach you how to play or help you up your game. Bike or hike the nearby trails in the morning — a promise of afternoon pool time may get kids on board with the plan.

TESTER NOTES: “It had a buzzy and active vibe, and there were families of all sizes and people of all generations,“ said our reviewer. “Plus, the food was fabulous, with vegan, gluten-free and kids’ options indicated on the menus.”

Orlando Hot Spots

KIDS’ CHOICE

Orlando, FL
Orlando, FL

No destination fulfills kids’ ultimate fantasies better than Orlando. In the self-proclaimed Theme Park Capital of the World, a mini vacationer can transform into a wand-wielding Hogwarts student, a Star Wars pilot or a shimmery princess. New experiences like Universal Studios Orlando’s DreamWorks Land are on the horizon, and the hotel count is closing in on 500. Most exciting for adults, a new high-speed Brightline train launched in the fall connecting Orlando with Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, so it’s all aboard for some beach R&R after an epic Orlando stay.

TESTER NOTES: Since our reviewer had been to Orlando’s theme parks multiple times, she focused her family’s trip on the city’s other attractions. “There are so many amazing dining options and activities beyond the parks,” she said. In particular, her kids, 8 and 10, had a blast at the Museum of Illusions in ICON Park, adding that her family “also loved the one-price brunch at Cafe Tu Tu Tango, which included an unlimited array of delicious tapas-style dishes plus a separate kids’ menu.”

FAVE DISNEY HOTEL

Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, Orlando, FL
Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, Orlando, FL

Deluxe hotels owned by Marriott, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin (including the newish Swan Reserve) offer most of the same amenities as the neighboring Disney properties at a fraction of the price. You can use Disney-run transportation, taking a water taxi to Hollywood Studios and, if you don’t feel like walking, to EPCOT as well. As is true for guests at the neighboring Disney hotels, buses will bring you to Animal Kingdom and the Magic Kingdom. You’ll have the same extended theme park hours as Disney hotel guests, and you’ll also be able to book restaurants and Lightning Lane ride entrances at the same time. Six pools — including one with waterfalls, a slide and a beach — 23 on-site restaurants and swan-shaped paddleboats make it tempting to hang at the resort as well. An extra bit of pixie dust: You can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points on the property.

TESTER NOTES: “The wait wasn’t long for water taxis or buses,” said our reviewer, who visited in August and highlighted how close it was to the Disney theme parks. She described her room at the Swan as “clean and comfortable”and enjoyed the quick-service coffee bars, ice cream at The Fountain and dinner at Il Mulino.

THEME PARK RESPITE

Grande Lakes Orlando, Orlando, FL
Grande Lakes Orlando, Orlando, FL

A 500-acre nature-filled oasis in the heart of the city, Grande Lakes Orlando provides the calm many families crave after a big day at the theme parks. Families can stay in the JW Marriott or The Ritz-Carlton — they’re connected by an indoor walkway — and access the amenities at both. Shuttles whisk families to/from Walt Disney World and Universal, which are about 20 minutes away. Regulars highly recommend flexing your theme park time so one morning you can take an eco-tour on the resort’s lake or go fishing. When you return to Grande Lakes at night, the comfiest beds await you. Book a family suite at the JW so kids can have bunks!

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer raved about the restaurants, noting that she didn’t need a reservation even in peak summer season. “Primo, an Italian restaurant, exceeded our expectations,” she said. “The food, service and ambiance was amazing. I could probably eat there every night.” While there is a huge amount to do in Orlando, our tester said, “With all the activities and places to dine, I could have stayed on property the whole time.”

NEW VALUE-PRICED PICK

Caribe Royale Orlando Resort, Orlando, FL
Caribe Royale Orlando Resort, Orlando, FL

A newly renovated all-suite hotel less than two miles from Walt Disney World gives families a lot of space for their money. At certain times of year, nightly rates for the 500-square-foot suites at the Caribe Royale Orlando Resort can drop as low as $200, including taxes and the hotel fee that covers transportation to Walt Disney World. Tastefully decorated suites each include a microwave, a mini fridge and a flat-screen TV. If you’d prefer a full kitchen or are a family of six, opt for a two-bedroom villa. It’s an outstanding value, especially if you consider the money you’ll save by making some of your own meals. When kids aren’t in the parks, a pool with a 75-foot waterslide and a splash pad will entertain your crew.

TESTER NOTES: “Our suite was spectacular,” said our reviewer. “It had king bed in the bedroom and a pullout sofa in the living room that both my kids slept on comfortably.” She also loved the location, noting, “It’s close to the airport and Walt Disney World. Plus, we were able to get to Target within a few minutes.”

MEMORABLE ATTRACTION

Discovery Cove, Orlando, FL
Discovery Cove, Orlando, FL

Sure, all travel is educational, but on a trip to the adventure park Discovery Cove, your kids will soak up facts about marine life and come away with an even bigger desire to protect it. Accredited by the Association of Zoo & Aquariums, the attraction is best for kids age 8 and up, who are old enough to take part in most of the activities that, along with food and drinks, are included in the admission price. The Dolphin Swim is the big crowd-pleaser: After you change into a provided wetsuit, animal care specialists fill in your crew on how dolphins communicate, what their behaviors mean and what they like to eat. Then comes a one-on-one encounter with a dolphin that kids will likely talk about for months.

TESTER NOTES: Discovery Cove offers several limited-space activities for an extra charge. Our reviewer’s family raved about the Flamingo Mingle, in which they got up close and personal with the birds. “It was a fun experience for all of us,” she said. Her husband and 10-year-old son also tried SeaVenture, an underwater walking tour for which guests wear a dive helmet. She said, “It was a small group, which allowed for everyone to interact with ocean life comfortably.”

Breathtaking Western Regions

SMALL TOWN ADVENTURES

Frisco, CO
Frisco, CO

Midway between Breckenridge and Copper Mountain lies Frisco, a tiny mountain resort town that’s known as the “Main Street of the Rockies.” Dotted with 50+ mom-and-pop shops and restaurants —many of which sell locally made items — Frisco’s Main Street has a laid-back, authentic vibe that all ages would enjoy. The nearby marina includes a small beach that satisfies young kids. But the truth is, families with adventure-seeking older tweens or teens get the most out of a trip to Frisco because of its incredible hiking, mountain biking and kayaking opportunities. Besides a vacation rental, your crew could stay at the Frisco Lodge or Frisco Inn on Galena — both in the heart of town.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, a home-improvement expert, appreciated seeing solar panels on many of the buildings in town almost as much as the two moose he spotted. “Frisco seemed to place a high value on sustainability,” he said. “There were plenty of EV charging stations available.” But he noted that he didn’t use his car much after the initial 90-minute drive from the Denver airport. He said, “Many of the activities and restaurants are accessible by foot.”

TRUE WEST TOWN

Casper, WY
Casper, WY

A mountain town in central Wyoming, Casper delivers an authentic Western experience minus the crowds of Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park. Your crew can hike, kayak and fly-fish surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes, and several attractions help kids understand how the Wild West evolved. At the free National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, families can explore hands-on exhibits, including a kids’ corner and Pony Express cabin, that capture what pioneers experienced in the mid-1800s. For dino fans in particular, the Tate Geological Museum wows with its skeleton of a T. Rex found in Wyoming. While there are a variety of chain hotels in town, vacation rentals are a great option if you plan to stay more than a few days.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer visited during the annual National College Rodeo Finals in June. “The atmosphere was fun, and there were local artisans selling a variety of wares,” she said. She also recommends the Dutch Oven Wagon Trail Trek, where families pile into a covered wagon for a 90-minute journey through historic trails that ends with a cookout on the banks of the Platte River.

EAT & PLAY

Grand Junction, CO
Grand Junction, CO

About four hours west of Denver, Grand Junction is a dream come true for families who love both great food and adventure. On some 1 million acres of public lands, hiking and biking trails and ATV tours abound — and there are plenty of outfitters with the equipment that kids need. You could even day-trip to Moab, which is about 90 minutes away. After you return from the fun activities, Grand Junction’s charming downtown welcomes you with tasty, affordable eats at family-friendly establishments, like Tacoparty, Pablo’s Pizza and Trail Life Brewing.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer’s family of five split their stay between Camp Eddy — a property that has vintage Airstreams and tiny homes — and Hotel Maverick, which offers family rooms with king-size bunk beds. “Camp Eddy has a great location on the Colorado River and is convenient to downtown. We loved the live music and food trucks they had one night,” said our reviewer. “On the campus of Colorado Mesa University, Hotel Maverick has a youthful energy plus the incredible Devil’s Kitchen rooftop restaurant with views of Colorado National Monument.”

SPRING BREAK HOT SPOT

Greater Palm Springs, CA
Greater Palm Springs, CA

The perfect time to visit Greater Palm Springs conveniently lines up with kids’ spring breaks. The region comprised of nine desert locales typically receives very little, if any, rain during March and April, and high temps reach the 80s. It’s home to stunning, pool-filled resorts, cultural attractions, outdoor adventures and, of course, fantastic shopping. One must-do with kids of all ages: Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up 8,000 feet to Mt. Jacinto State Park, which has stunning views and a kid-friendly Long Valley Discovery Trail hike.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, who visited in September, called the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens “the best zoo I’ve ever been to” and noted that it was “wide open and serene.” She stayed at La Quinta Resort & Club, which has sprinkled 43 (that’s not a typo) pools around the property. In addition to the main pool overlooking the San Rosa Mountains, each casita has a smaller pool nearby so your crew will never have to walk far to take a dip. “A kids’ club operates in peak season, and year-round, kids can participate in a scavenger hunt to earn a prize,” said our reviewer.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Branson, MO
Branson, MO
Credit: Explore Branson

Nowhere in the “Show-Me” state can a family see and do more together than Branson. One day, your crew can bike some of the hundreds of miles of scenic trails in the Ozark Mountains and the next, your rides can take the form of coasters at the epic Silver Dollar City theme park. Live shows and entertainment, including the popular Dolly Parton’s Stampede, give families fun options at night. Shedding its reputation as a destination for older adults, the average age of a visitor to Branson has dropped nine years since 2015 and 60% of visitors are families with kids.

TESTER NOTES: “Nature, history, roller coasters, arcades, theater, music, horses, you name it and Branson has some version of it,” said our reviewer, who visited in August with her sister and three kids ranging in age from 6 to 14. Her family’s highlights included Snowflex Tubing in the Ozarks (“All of the fun of snow tubing without the bulky clothes or freezing cold weather”) and Silver Dollar City (“Besides great rides, artisans dressed in themed clothing and roamed the park”).

Action-Packed Mountain Resorts

Castle in the Catskills

Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY
Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY

Standing before the Mohonk Mountain House, your kids will think they’re about to enter a fairy tale. And they’re not wrong. The Victorian castle resort on a private glacial lake is an all-inclusive, so let their fairy godmothers of sorts guide you through a jam-packed lineup of activities that families can do together (like archery in the forest or ice-skating in an open-air stone pavilion) plus a supervised nature-focused program for kids ages 4 to 12 at no extra charge. All meals are rolled into the price too, so don’t miss taking the kids to the afternoon tea and cookies in the Lake Lounge and clicking your cups to a happily ever after vacation.

TESTER NOTES: Calling the food “top-notch,” our reviewer praised the variety for kids and adults, the dietary accommodations and the local ingredients — right down to the butter from Ronnybrook Farms. She appreciated thoughtful touches, like having a water bottle refill station on each floor. The sheer number of activities on her summertime visit impressed her most of all: “We really loved relaxing by the lake but also trying new things, like canoeing, pedal boats, hiking and tomahawk throwing. It was the perfect balance for us.”

ADVENTURE MADE EASY

Limelight Hotel, Snowmass Village, CO
Limelight Hotel, Snowmass Village, CO

It feels like Limelight Hotel, Snowmass Village was reading parents’ minds when they opened their chic 99-room property five years ago. For starters, they decrease your mental load by picking you up at the nearby Aspen airport and offering a daily complimentary breakfast buffet. They created a kids’ hangout space and stocked it with books, toys and games, so mini vacationers have a place to play and perhaps make a new pal in the process. When the hotel designed its five-story rock climbing wall, it included a route for beginners so littles can get in on the action. The Elk Camp Gondola, which will whisk your family to the mountain, is just a short walk away so kids can save their energy for the ski and hiking trails, ropes course, zip line, mountain biking and other fun.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer, a home-improvement expert, praised the accommodations. “The bed was one of the most comfortable we’ve ever slept in,” he said. “My wife and I both remarked on how solidly built everything was — from the heavy doors to the durable furnishings.”

WESTERN CHARM

Red Cliffs Lodge, Moab, UT
Red Cliffs Lodge, Moab, UT

Constructed beside dramatic cliffs and sprawling canyons, Red Cliffs Lodge sets the mood for an incredible family adventure to Arches National Park, about six miles north. The property provides a variety of cabin-style accommodations at various price points, but even budget options can sleep six. Fuel up in the morning at The Cowboy Grill before heading to the national park, which is known for its 2,000 natural stone arches. After a day of exploring, a dip in the solar-heated pool relieves sore muscles and ensures the kids will fall fast asleep.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer’s family of five booked side-by-side cabins. “The cabin that my wife and I stayed in was luxurious and packed with charming Western decor and things like coffee-table books, a telescope, a hot tub and a fully-stocked kitchen,” said our reviewer. Our older boys stayed next door in one of the lower-priced cabins, and it was comfortable, clean and cozy.” Our reviewer also appreciated that the property attracted an “international crowd and a good number of guests with kids.”

YEAR-ROUND FUN

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT
Smugglers’ Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT

A four-seasons vacation spot nestled in Vermont’s Green Mountains, Smugglers’ Notch Resort is so sure that kids ages 3 and up will love its summer camps that it provides a money-back guarantee if a camper isn’t having fun after two days. More likely, kids return the following year for another camp or family adventure. Smuggs, as its many repeat guests call the resort, will keep your crew as busy as you want to be. The Big Smuggle obstacle course, treks in the woods with a llama and an Air Dummy Derby are among the quirkier choices. Since some of the property’s condos have five bedrooms, don’t be shy about bringing the whole gang.

TESTER NOTES: “We had an incredible time zip-lining and doing the treetop obstacle course, plus visiting the various pools and slides at the resort,” said our reviewer, who traveled with her partner and two tweens. “We also spent three hours doing archery.” During their three-night stay, they found it easy to cook in their two-bedroom condo, which our reviewer described as “extremely comfortable with beautiful mountain views.”

NONSTOP FUN IN THE POCONOS

Woodloch Resort, Hawley, PA
Woodloch Resort, Hawley, PA

With 30 activities available during every season at the all-inclusive Woodloch Resort in the Pocono Mountains, your kids will never say the “B” word (bored). Whether or not Mother Nature comes through with snow in the winter, Woodloch makes its own so wanna-be sledders and snow tubers won’t be disappointed. Holidays usher in guest favorites like a Gingerbread Wars contest and a Yule Log Hunt. In the warmer months, the spring-fed lake becomes the hub of the action as families partake in paddleboarding, sailing and other water sports. Woodloch knows that pools are always a kid magnet, so it offers both indoor and outdoor options, each with a splash play park. Get the camera app ready: One of the slides is even shaped like a frog’s mouth and kids can slide down the tongue!

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer stayed in a double queen room with her family of three, noting that “everything was in good condition.” The large closet and six-drawer dresser fit their belongings with room to spare. But she noted that the resort can accommodate large families with roomier suites and vacation homes with up to six bedrooms.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN GETAWAY

Grand Colorado on Peak Eight, Breckenridge, CO
Grand Colorado on Peak Eight, Breckenridge, CO

If you plan to take the kids to Breckenridge in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, make Grand Colorado on Peak Eight your outpost. Right outside the resort, the lift will whisk your crew to the mountain or you can hop on a gondola to town. The smallest room is bigger than many hotel suites, and four-bedroom residences with kitchens sleep 16 so you can split the cost with extended family or a group of friends. Kids have tons of places to play throughout the resort, including an ice-skating rink that gets turned into a green space with big toys in the summertime and pools that have separate shallow areas for littles. Your crew can even rent one of the resort’s five private movie theaters, some with beanbag chairs for the kiddos, for a family movie night.

TESTER NOTES: “The vibe is very laid-back,” said our reviewer, who visited with her three young children. “We mainly saw families with kids of every age, from babies to teens.” She also noted that in addition to recycling, the resort composts and the entire place is “extremely clean and well-kept.”

THE NORTHWEST’S RAY OF SUNSHINE

Sunriver Resort, Sunriver, OR
Sunriver Resort, Sunriver, OR

In a region known for its moody weather, Sunriver Resort — as its name implies — is a bright spot. With 300 sunny days a year, the sprawling getaway near a river in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains lures families with outdoor adventures like fishing, kayaking and horseback riding. At its Bike Bar, your crew can choose to rent from 300+ options (including tandems and trailers with a hitch). The 34 miles of scenic paved trails at the resort are separated from roadways, making a family ride safer for young kids. In the unlikely event of rain, the Aquatics Center saves the day with an indoor pool and waterslide.

TESTER NOTES: “If you’re traveling from the East Coast, plan to spend at least four to five full days at the resort,” said our reviewer, who flew into the Redmond, OR, airport from a layover in Salt Lake City. “You need that many to relax and enjoy all the activities. She also notes that it’s doable to combine Sunriver with a stay in Portland, OR, which is about 3 1/2 hours away.

SLOPESIDE STAY

Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa, Beaver Creek, CO
Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa, Beaver Creek, CO

Families can walk to school at Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa — ski school that is. The only ski-in, ski-out property at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain (about two hours from Denver), the chateau-style lodging sits next door to the building with ski and snowboard lessons for kids as young as 3, plus the beginner-friendly gondola. So if your kids need to come back for a midafternoon nap — or are just ready for some pool time — it’s not a big deal.
Its 193 rooms are sophisticated but not stuffy — and some even have balconies with mountain views. After the winter wonderland melts away for the year, hiking, fly-fishing, hot-air ballooning and whitewater rafting take over.

TESTER NOTES: “When we first arrived, I thought this hotel was far too fancy to be kid-friendly, but I was wrong — everyone had kids,” said our reviewer, who brought her three daughters under age 8. Her favorite thing about the resort was the food, but her older two girls loved the hotel’s in-room amenity with a tent, sleeping bag and faux firepit so much that they “camped out” rather than sleeping in the beds.

Unforgettable Adventures & Attractions

MILESTONE VACATION SPOT

Flathead Lake Lodge, Big Fork, MT
Flathead Lake Lodge, Big Fork, MT

If you’re planning a trip with the extended family to celebrate a milestone anniversary, birthday or graduation, we have three words: Flathead Lake Lodge. Open May through October, the family-operated, all-inclusive guest ranch truly facilitates family bonding through its seemingly never-ending lineup of activities that you sign up for when you arrive for the week. (It also helps that the guest rooms don’t have TVs.) Although there isn’t an official camp, the supervised kids’ activities, broken down by age group, run morning to night. Well-planned meals, stellar service and a stunning lakeside location make this a true gem. Plan to stay in the area a few extra days to explore nearby Glacier Bay National Park.

TESTER NOTES: “Every activity is outstanding,” said our reviewer, who visited with her parents, daughter and nephews and tried mountaintop yoga, horseback riding and flower-arranging class among many other things. “It’s so family-oriented and communal and everyone in our group had the best time, even my dad, who hates everything.” She also thought the food was delicious, noting “I loved that they had wine pairings with every dinner and that the kids had a separate meal and meal time if they wanted but could also eat with adults if they preferred.”

ALASKA WITH THE GRANDPARENTS

Princess Cruises, Majestic Princess to Alaska
Princess Cruises, Majestic Princess to Alaska

Sailing round trip from Seattle to Alaska in 2024, Majestic Princess isn’t the cruise line’s newest ship, but it’s the one that offers the Hollywood Pool Club — an indoor pool complex with cabana-like spaces that everyone can access at no extra charge. It’s just one of the many places on board the 6-year-old ship where you’ll find grandparents living out their bucket-list dream of not only seeing Alaska, but doing so with the whole family. Even the bulk of the onboard entertainment — from shows in the theater to DJ dance parties midship — is designed for all generations to enjoy together.

TESTER NOTES: Book excursions, especially those related to glaciers, when you reserve the sailing. “There was a waiting list in the hundreds for one of the excursions on our cruise,” said our reviewer, who sailed with her daughter in July. Overall, the food was very good, she noted, and the specialty restaurant The Catch by Rudi felt five-star. However, one of the simplest things turned out to be her daughter’s favorite: “Almost every day, we’d get a soft-serve ice cream cone from the pool deck and enjoy it on our balcony watching the surreal landscape, which included giant floating glacial ice chunks and an occasional dolphin.”

LEGENDARY DUDE RANCH

C U Lazy Ranch, Granby, CO
C U Lazy Ranch, Granby, CO

For more than 70 years, families have been galloping to the all-inclusive C U Lazy Ranch, roughly two hours northwest of Denver, for its summertime kids and teen program. Whether they have never seen a real horse before or take regular lessons, campers ages 3 to 17 go on supervised trail rides daily interspersed with fishing, pool time, lawn games, hayrides and, for teens only, an overnight campout. After breakfast as a family, campers and adults start their separate activities, although they’re welcome to stick together at any time. Cabins are comfortable, and many offer two or even three bedrooms.

TESTER NOTES: “My girls, ages 5 and 8, made friends, rode horses/ponies for the first time, performed riding events and a talent show in front of complete strangers, had delicious food, saw amazing sites and just generally had the absolute time of their lives,” said our reviewer. She noted to wait until your youngest child is at least 3 years old, so all the kids can participate in the activities. “Don’t come here prepared to spend time just within your own family unit,” she said. “This place is about bonding with other guests and, if you’re very lucky, making friends for life. Prepare to be social and you’ll have the best time ever. Even the teenagers seemed to be loving life.”

INCREDIBLE SMALL-SHIP EXPERIENCE

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, Wild Galápagos and Peru Escape
Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, Wild Galápagos and Peru Escape

The first company to bring travelers to the Galápagos Islands more than 50 years ago now has a partnership to make a trip to see the archipelago’s famed wildlife more accessible to kids and families. During the 11-day Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Wild Galápagos and Peru Escape or seven-day trip just to the Galápagos, kids and teens become Global Explorers, heading to the small ship’s Science Hub that’s outfitted with real equipment for hands-on learning experiences. Under the wings of a naturalist, kids learn how to make better observations and keep records in a guidebook specially developed for the voyage — then apply them during the day’s wildlife adventures. The program is also available on trips to Alaska, Antarctica and Baja California.

TESTER NOTES: “The Global Explorers program was a huge highlight of the trip for my 9-year-old,” said our reviewer. “He learned about the ship, the native and endemic animals and plants and even how to drive a Zodiac boat,” she added. “Even though he is dyslexic and writing is tough for him, he did it all. The program culminated in a ceremony where he earned the Global Explorer title.”

CAN’T-MISS CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

Children's Museum Houston, Houston, TX
Children’s Museum Houston, Houston, TX

One of the few children’s museums with appeal for toddlers to middle-schoolers, Children’s Museum Houston packs the fun into its 90,000-square-foot space that’s conveniently located in the city’s Museum District. Toddlers adore the exhibit that blows colorful scarves through a labyrinth of tubes and out for them to catch in the air. You’ll find older kids in the Maker Annex or Power Science Lab. Reflecting the community, signage is in English and Spanish — and the work of Latino and Asian scientists is highlighted. The museum hosts Sensory-Friendly Days as well as a variety of special workshops and holiday events.

TESTER NOTES: “The EcoStation exhibit, with its native plant garden, outdoor water play and cabin with chicken incubators, was one of my family’s favorites,” said our tester, who visited with three boys. “But truly everything was interactive and held their attention for a while. They almost forgot they were learning something until they read about what each exhibit did.”

EPIC THEMING

LEGOLAND New York Resort, Goshen, NY
LEGOLAND New York Resort, Goshen, NY

An awesome day awaits families at LEGOLAND New York Resort, a theme park, water park and hotel in New York’s Hudson Valley. Unlike other major theme parks, LEGOLAND is designed exclusively for kids ages 2 to 12 and their families, so you’re not paying for giant thrill rides that the kids are too small (or scared) to go on. For instance, the park’s signature Dragon coaster isn’t too high, fast or frightening, making it the perfect first coaster ride for kiddos. Fun touches are in store for kids at the hotel, where even the soap in the bathroom is shaped like a Lego brick!

TESTER NOTES: “The theming is executed so well!” said our reviewer, who visited with her three young children. At the park, she noted that “Miniland, an area of Lego replicas, is truly amazing.” The kingdom-themed hotel room that the family stayed at was very exciting for her kids. “They loved the scavenger hunt in the room, which led them to opening a safe with locked Lego treasure inside!” she said. “The hotel elevators with disco balls and music were another highlight for the whole family! We loved dancing our way up to our floor.”

Fun-Filled Camping & Glamping

ALL-STAR CAMPGROUNDS

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts
Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts

With more than 75 locations in North America, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts are masters at introducing young families to the joys of camping. All locations include pools, waterslides, splash grounds and mini golf, plus character meet-and-greets with Yogi Bear and a variety of family-friendly programming.
Although the type and number of accommodations varies by campground, you can typically choose from tent camping, RV sites, cabins and glamping-style options. Many also have playgrounds, on-site eateries and a store for supplies, so you don’t have to leave.

TESTER NOTES: Our testers stayed in more than a half dozen locations across the country, and they all were impressed. One standout feature: the waterpark. “The boys had a great time running around getting soaked, zooming down the slides and getting doused with water from the many spray features,” said one tester, who visited the location in Glen Elis, NH. Another tester, who visited the location in North Lawrence, OH, with children ranging in age from 7 to 13, said, “The kids can definitely be more independent here, as they can walk to activities like basketball, volleyball and the arcade.”

WAGONS WITH BENEFITS

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, River Ranch, FL
Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, River Ranch, FL

At Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, families can stay in an air-conditioned Conestoga wagon that offers the comforts of home (phew, there’s a bathroom with a shower) plus a personal concierge. No sleeping bags for you: This wagon includes a king bed with luxe linens, a bunk bed and pull-out couch, plus musts for picky eaters like a mini fridge and microwave. If the wagon isn’t your thing, you can opt for a more traditional glamping tent or even a tepee. No matter what, you’ll score a golf cart to take your crew to the Saturday Night Rodeo and other Western-themed activities. It’s hard to believe that the resort is just an hour from Orlando.

TESTER NOTES:
Our reviewer, her two kids and her mom stayed in a wagon, noting that “the space was much larger than I expected and was extremely well-designed, modern and glamping-chic!” Between the petting zoo, airboat rides, horseback riding and more, the family never made it to the pool. Breakfast also had a twist: “You give your personal concierge your breakfast order the night before, and in the morning it’s delivered and placed in a huge barrel outside of your wagon,” she reported.

NEXT-LEVEL GLAMPING

The Resort at Paws Up, Greenough, MT
The Resort at Paws Up, Greenough, MT

A deluxe all-inclusive, The Resort at Paws Up sweeps families off their feet with the most high-end glamping experience that you could imagine — plus over 70 different activities to try. The glamping tents have chandeliers, fine linens and beautiful furnishings. You even have access to a personal chef who will make your food to order and keep the lemonade, espresso and sangrias flowing. Don’t worry about dressing fancy though — this is a 37,000-acre working cattle ranch in Montana, so jeans are just perfect. On Tuesdays, guests gather at a chuckwagon dinner by the Blackfoot River that offers live music and wagon rides. In summer and fall, a supervised program introduces kids ages 3 to 12 to sapphire hunting (can we come?), archery, geocaching and other cool pursuits. If glamping isn’t for your family, you could rent a cabin or house instead.

TESTER NOTES: Our reviewer thought the vibe was immaculate. “The resort offers so much to do but doesn’t force you to try anything,” said the reviewer. “At the chuckwagon dinner, for instance, a staff member was tossing lassos but didn’t call over to the guests; she just waited patiently for anyone to approach and ask for a lesson or if they could try. It made for a very peaceful feeling.”
